I keep telling people - pay attention to and vote in local elections (e.g. school board, city hall), because if you don't, this is what happens

After a brief taste of the old normal, today we’ll be back to unseasonably warm weather in #ldnont. Five degrees above normal. This weekend, let’s be thankful for the people leading us to a sustainable future. There are not enough of them, & they are seldom recognized. #ClimateCrisis.

Too often the “go too” argument for disappointment with universities is #AcademicFreedom. In my experience, if a system is not working, the first place to look is at the people running the system. This is seldom the focus. Universities are amazing places, but they need governance reform. #cdnpse

University governance is broken, and it’s breaking people.

University governance and associated regulatory structures assume the most powerful senior office holders will behave in accordance with the high standards benefiting their station.

I’m not there as often as I used to be. I totally agree that cross harbour traffic is great (big fan of downtown Dartmouth), but traffic in #HRM is really bad. There is a place for the personal automobile, but the solution to traffic is to get more people out of their cars, which the tolls helped.
tpcanoe.bsky.social
#Halifax bridge toll blunder: ignoring induced demand. This is something everyone should know by now. Want to solve traffic woes? Invest in bikes, buses, & trains. And, of course, force developers to build for walkability. This isn’t rocket science. #NSpoli

#ldnont is 100% bikeable for much of the year. The problem is the city has designed its roadways and streets to be unfriendly (& often dangerous) to cyclists & pedestrians. #VisionZero

“In London cyclists now outnumber cars in the City by 2 to 1. Paris, where they now outnumber motorists across the whole city, is catching up with Europe’s traditional bike capitals, Amsterdam & Copenhagen…In Copenhagen, bikes account for almost half of commuter trips to work/school.” @economist.com

I worry deeply about the erosion of local & municipal politics (esp. in #onpoli). Cities have been one of the few layers of government living up to their fiduciary duty to their constituents. #cdnpoli

“London hits 'historic' clean air milestone 184 years early…a 'truly remarkable turnaround for the city's air quality.”

Quite a leadership achievement for @london.gov.uk’s government! While nations talk, (some) cities act. And get results.

There are many stinky parts to the #SkillsDevelopment scandal in #onpoli. One of the worst is the fact that #onpse is on a lifeline & this money could be used to bolster institutions designed to prepare #Ontarians to contribute to our communities. #cdnpse

I was a college student for 11 years and I’ve taught on college campus for 31 years. In those 42 years on campuses, only 4!were spent at a private school. The rest have been at underfunded public institutions.

Friends, please don’t think of Harvard as representative of higher ed in the US. I don’t.

What Governor Pritzker is doing is right for his state, but it is vital for the Republic.

Yup. We need major change in our #onpoli. We should not tolerate this type of revolving door.

I will credit my posting about our unseasonably hot summer and fall, but today in #ldnont, for the first time in a long time, we will have seasonable weather, just one degree below the average. To keep it this way, you & I have to make good choices & push decision makers to embrace systemic change.

What is happening in the #UnitedStates is unambiguously illegal & unconstitutional. This video demonstrates the gross abuse of power that is taking place. There must be accountability.

tpcanoe.bsky.social
I completely agree about that.
tpcanoe.bsky.social
I agree but personal choices are part of what is going to make that shift. Currently, it appears - based on many of our choices - that no one really cares enough about this to make it happen (there are, of course, other places that can help with this, such as #cdnmedia)
tpcanoe.bsky.social
I am not sure that I take it seriously enough. I make the right choices when it is convenient but have not made major shifts around frequency of travel, food choices, & even use of the internet.
tpcanoe.bsky.social
Today will be 7 degrees cooler than yesterday in #ldnont, but still 5 degrees above the seasonal norm. I can’t think of the last time we had seasonal weather or when the temperature was below average. We are living through an experiment b/c you & I won’t take the #ClimateCrisis seriously.
tpcanoe.bsky.social
This stinks and helps us better understand attacks on #cdnpse. It is hard to grease the wheels of political friendship in an environment with #academicfreedom & #collegialgovernance. The #SkillsDevelopmentFund looks corrupt. #onpoli

Another lovely July day in #ldnont. We are eleven degrees above normal. I can’t help but wonder what this means for the coming winter. I am going to guess that in a week or two we just plunge through the fall. We need to be talking much more about the #ClimateCrisis.
