my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

Sight & Sound: Film - I had to learn filmmaking by working with 8mm film, using cameras so old they said "Made in West Germany" on the side, and editing with razor blades & tape on a Steenbeck. Gave me a grounding and respect for the craft I don't think I would have had from digital only learning.

Imagine being nearly 80 years old and deciding that you want your last act in public life to be an embarrassing primary loss against a military veteran who already beat you to the pulse of your state's people. And all because Graham Platner might force Chuck Schumer to work for five minutes.

It's really simple

Voters want an opposition party that will fight for them, and democracy, like there's no tomorrow

Dem elites want a members-only social club where polite, dues-paying members who they like to see at cocktail parties get rewarded with plum roles www.politico.com/news/2025/10...
Chuck Schumer gets his preferred candidate, Janet Mills, in crowded Maine Senate race
Schumer had been aggressively recruiting Mills to challenge Republican Susan Collins.

Why would a billionaire want a functioning paper? Functioning papers cover shit like “did you know this billionaire makes his workers pee into bottles instead of taking a break” and “you pay way more tax than a guy with ten yachts”
unclespaceghost.bsky.social
In fairness, the value is ALSO in destroying the paper that once took down a president. Can't have engines of accountability in unfriendly hands!
unclespaceghost.bsky.social
As buffoonish as all the moves at WaPo away from their readership seem, it is worth wondering whether or not those are by design, because it is also worth wondering who stands to benefit if there's one less national paper with a reputation for investigative journalism.
unclespaceghost.bsky.social
Consider for a moment what it means to submarine and (eventually) destroy the paper that investigated Watergate. To a certain segment, Watergate and the accountability it promised the powerful is/was the greatest threat to their station. This goes beyond who likes what they see from editorial.
unclespaceghost.bsky.social
I know the tendency these days is to analyze everything as 4D Chess, but in WaPo's case, this has always been the goal. It's the Zaslav Strategy: take a venerable pillar of media or journalism and scrap it for parts.

This December 11th, wish the Italian-Americans in your life a Happy La Guardia Day
Fiorello La Guardia, an Italian-American every New Yorker is justly proud of.

Halloween H20 might be the most millennial coded horror movie ever made
unclespaceghost.bsky.social
Part of me genuinely misses this specific kind of horror movie from the 80s-90s, where everything is shot in vibrant color and the horror is practically humor. Like Maximum Overdrive and Jack Frost. Legendarily trashy.

I, for one, am glad Stanley Kubrick left out the hedge animals. That chapter is a scar on my brain.

Win or lose, I have long accepted that the Mariners play an elevated form of the sport of baseball where distinctions like success or failure mean very little. Their existence itself is enlightened by freedom from constraint.

(That said, without a dog in the fight, I am all in on the Mariners)

I didn't realize that I need the Aces to use One-Winged Angel during player intros, but now that I have been enlightened...
