I love this clip of my GenZ son recapping the importance of the Andor series in the parthenon of Star Wars, esp. as it related to the gospel of Luke. (also a teaser for our podcast, SW4D Generation Space Time on YouTube and our #Pride edition)

The Toronto Star wrote up a history of TO Bike Share, an interesting complement to @stateofthecity.bsky.social's thread on saving Montréal's bike share. TO followed in making it a public system after PBSC went bankrupt. (Plus, adorable bike graphics!)

The amount of money we’ve spent in 5 years on rentals and Communautos doesn’t even come close to the average cost of car ownership for 1 year in #canada

When my partner's car died almost 11 years ago, we calculated that it would be cheaper to rent every other weekend than the spend the $$ on maintenance for his clunker. We've been #carfree ever since!

About 5 years #carfree for us. Well north of £10k saved. I’m used to it now but ‘free’ is the right term. It honestly felt like having a weight lifted. No stressing about insurance, huge unexpected bills & money wasted at petrol pumps. Journeys are now fun. 🚆 🚊 🚃 🚌 🚲 🚶‍♀️

On this date, Matthew Shephard died 27 years ago. He was beaten, tortured, and left for dead on fence for being gay. Please keep him and his wonderful mother Judy in your thoughts. And let's all work for a world where such horrific things do not happen to anyone. ❤️🏳️‍🌈

Yes, we’re not “super urban” but the key metrics around “how many people drive to work” are much, much better in Canada. Chicago has about 1/2 as many people taking transit as Toronto, 2 cities of equal size.

“Bikes actually transform cities in the way autonomous cars promise”
brenttoderian.bsky.social
“The big advantage of bikes is that they go directly from where you start to where you finish, when you need to go. The advantage over cars is that they need perhaps 1/10th of the amount of space. Roads that jam up quickly with cars can carry effectively unlimited numbers of people by bicycle.”

Bike share revenue is up over 30% compared to last year, and now has close to 300k unique customers. That is 10% of the population of Toronto! I also think that their internal forecasts are a little pessimistic pinning 2025 rides at 8.1 million. I forecast closer to 8.3M when the year is over.

Released on this day in 1988, U2’s ‘Rattle and Hum’ blurred the line between tribute and transformation — gospel choirs, B.B. King, Sun Studio, and pure Americana soul. From “Desire” to Dylan, the boys from Dublin went searching for rock’s roots.

My unpopular urbanist opinion is that big, hyperfast two-wheelers are a menace and should be banned from bike lanes/paths (with enforcement).

These things endanger everyone riding a bike or legal e-bike. Worse, they deter some from even trying.
E-bikes have evolved into e-motorcycles. Law enforcement is lagging behind.
Serious injuries are on the rise in emergency rooms around the country, as electric cycles become bigger and faster. Lawmakers and police departments are scrambling to address the problem.

The experts say fast is more important than free - and probably harder - but nice to see someone focus on something can really impacts people’s urban life

I'm on the slowest bus line in the city with the slowest buses in the nation to talk to New Yorkers about what it would mean for their lives if we made them fast and free.
Zohran sits on a bus talking to a rider sitting behind him.
