The cover to my book, "Privilege, Economy and State in Old Regime France" A map showing the underwriting portfolio of Elisabeth Hélissant, a Parisian insurer, in 1672. The size of the circles corresponds with how frequently each port/place/country (as named in each policy) appeared in her portfolio Rue Quincampoix in central Paris, where the Royal Insurance Chamber and the Royal Insurance Company were based. These are explored in my book, "Privilege, Economy and State in Old Regime France". The Royal Insurance Company was located in the building immediately to the left of the image.

Going to present a chapter of my book manuscript on October 24, 12:30 PM EST. It is a detailed look on the European market for sugar and tobacco over 120 years that tries to break with methodological nationalism through multisited, multilanguage research on dozens of archives. On zoom as well.

This is what was missed in much of the discussion immediately following the announcement: the committee's statement on Machado comes across as pointedly anti-Trump, but the decision itself is surely intended to placate Trump, as Machado has aligned herself with him and his decisions

I wish I could say things are better here in the UK, but they're not. There was one permanent Early Modern Europe job in 2024–5, which went to somebody who already had a permanent job somewhere else. You really do have to be willing to be mobile now to have any real shot at a permanent position

There came a point where I started wondering if the Tories were consciously self-sabotaging because they were making such mystifyingly inexcusable blunders. I'm at this point now with Labour.

I think it was @hannahfearn.bsky.social who was asking what's up with the govt's ability to read the room ...
In what world is the response to high-profile and vocal groups of parents raising concerns about teens and smartphones to propose digital ID for teenagers?

There has been a backlash to the announcement a UK-wide digital ID scheme will be introduced by 2029.

Pro-Tip:

If you are emailing a prospective grad school adviser and have actually read their work, sure, feel free to mention that. But if you haven't, please don't try to fake it.

I know what my departmental page says about my books because I wrote the page. You shouldn't quote it back to me.

This often seems to benefit more affluent areas. Take Burnley. Most homes cost £125,000 and are in the lowest band A. They pay roughly £1,337 a year in council tax.

Compare that to Westminster, where the average house price is just shy of £1mn. They pay an average £1,057.

TFW you paid $1400 to see Beckett’s most famous work without knowing anything about it
One Star Review of Waiting for Godot on Broadway
I recently attended Waiting for Godot on Broadway and spent over $1,400 for two Row C seats (103 and 104). I'm a longtime admirer of Broadway productions and even hold a season pass for Shea's Performing Arts Theatre, so I came in with genuine enthusiasm and high expectations. Unfortunately, this show was unlike anything ! have ever experienced —and not in a good way.
What I encountered was not the artistry, music, or emotional storytelling I usually associate with Broadway, but instead what felt like an endless cycle of nonsensical conversation between characters who seemed trapped in their own madness. I tried-truly tried-to find meaning, symbolism, or even a thread of emotional resonance. I stayed through the first half hoping the second would offer clarity. But by intermission, it was clear: this was a waste of both time and money.
Keanu Reeves is an actor I respect greatly, but I cannot fathom why he would agree to participate in such a disjointed, inaccessible production. His talent was lost in a performance that defied reason rather than provoked insight.
To anyone considering attending: unless you are drawn to highly abstract, nearly incomprehensible theater, I strongly caution you against this show. For the average, educated, thoughtful theatergoer, it is far more frustrating than fulfilling. In my opinion, this was the single most disappointing Broadway experience I've ever had - an unfortunate waste of money and, more importantly, of time.

And while the #EU is confronted by numerous serious crises, this - using state power to prohibit people from calling a burger a burger unless someone is killed for it - is the issue European right has focused on.

Today the EU parliament voted to ban the word burger if they are made with plant protein, instead of animal protein. 🤦🏻‍♀️

They claim it’s to stop consumers being ‘confused between meat and plant products’ - solving a problem that nobody had!

This new rule leaves a bad taste in the mouth…
