I usually go a few years between SOTN playthroughs, and in that time I slowly forget that it's one of the most fun games ever made.

Then I start playing it and immediately remember that it is in fact one of the most fun games ever made.

Death's bumbling minions, Slogra and Gaibon, a sort of Bebop and Rocksteady or Bulk and Skull duo, foolishly step to Alucard, seemingly unaware that he's going to destroy their dumb asses with his sexy vampire prowess.

In Castlevania's elaborate clock room, Alucard crosses paths with the mysterious Maria Renard. She leans against the wall like a cool lady before introducing herself and explaining her quest to locate the missing heir to the Belmont clan, her homeboy Richter.

Alucard naively attempts to parley with a nice young lady, perhaps unaware that she isn't a real lady but rather the mimic tail of a ferocious ambush-hunting beast.

Progressing through the twisted entrails of Castlevania, Alucard is assaulted by a doppelganger from the cosmic void. Uninterested in a psychological battle, Alucard simply beats the doppelganger into submission and banishes it back to the infinite abyss.

Another very spooky Fighting Game Friday, featuring newcomers Hsien-Ko and Donovan.

The new characters are welcome but this entry feels rather incremental in comparison to the future Vampire Savior with its massive roster update.

Jiang Shi Hsien-Ko summons and bangs a mystic gong, repelling noble half-vampire Buddhist monk Donovan Baine.

In a field of crops under an intense sun, Donovan summons a Jojo stand to electrocute Hsien-Ko with a scattered mess of lightning bolts. Skirt flapping, his muscular thighs are exposed and tantalizing.

Continuing his assault, Donovan summons a different Jojo stand, an ice goddess, to freeze Hsien-Ko in her tracks.

Hsien-Ko flies through the air to deliver her heel directly into Donovan's face. Her leg reach is impressive, her form immaculate. Donovan's ward, young Anita, clutches her dolly and observes the ass beating stoically.

After encountering a host of indescribable Lovecraft horrors and eldritch beasts from Hell, I was delighted to meet by far the best enemy in the game, an adorable void cat.

Damn fine kitty right there.

Koudelka prepares to deploy her most deadly magic as a four-armed demonic brute bears down upon her.

Edward looks up in horror at an eldritch monstrosity composed of an extraneous amount of limbs, some of them human. He prepares to strike.

Koudelka takes in the decadent ambiance of Patrick Heyworth's quarters. Red carpet adorns the stairs. Masterwork statuary hold aloft burning candles. Marble pillars project wealth and power. Yes, Patrick Heyworth, owner of Nemeton Monastary, certainly thinks highly of himself.

In Roger Bacon's room, the party is attacked by what seems to be a mundane black cat, but this feline holds an arcane surprise. This may be my favorite CRT photo I've ever taken.

Not sure I'd ever be able to get over my initial reaction to those N64 Castlevania games to give them a proper look. Absolutely hated them at the time. Ended up hating them even more in retrospect when I finally played Symphony years later and saw what I was missing, not having a Playstation.

Related, I played Red Dead Online for a month, and one time I shot a duck (for animal fat) and was standing knee-deep in a placid pond with a duck in my hand when another player, an indigenous person, possibly hacking, appeared from nowhere and killed my colonizer ass with arrows.

That was great.

Continuing Koudelka. I'm already on Disc 3 (of 4)!

The standout feature of this game is the story scenes with full voice acting and motion capture. The writing and acting aren't always GREAT, but are always impressive, and have a lot of heart. Has the feel of a passion project.

Edward squares up to a Lovecraftian monstrosity while Koudelka prepares to own it with her magic spells. He's lookin' pretty good in those jeans. Cute little backpack, too.

Ambushed by a petty thief with a deadly six-shooter who is weirdly resistant to arcane magics, Koudelka goes ape shit with her flanged mace. Her anachronistic 90's outfit is cool and cute.

Edward and Koudelka recoil when confronted by a horrific monster that seems pulled straight out of John Carpenter's "The Thing". Its body horror-inducing tentacle heads loom over them in the foreground.

Separated from her erstwhile companions by an extremely aggro Gargoyle, Koudelka sets out on her own in the monastery's courtyard.
