My textcast - where you read it, but there's also an accompanying playlist - is BACK. Some remarkable choices from @joannawyld.bsky.social that were new to me. Please share with anyone you think might be interested. Thank you. #FirstLastAnything

The load-bearing myth at the heart of UK politics is that the politicians and media are tolerant and decent and working people are knuckle-dragging bigots, but it's actually completely the other way around.
A man on the streets of the UK is asked about the “problem of immigration” and dismantles talking points with ease.

I enjoyed this essay on ‘Paradise Lost’ - perhaps you would too, @vcorenmitchell.bsky.social, if you aren’t already aware of it?

The Sound and the Story: Exploring the World of Paradise Lost
John Milton’s Paradise Lost has been many things to many people — a Christian epic, a comment on the English Civil War, the epitome of poetic ambiguity — but it is first of all a pleasure to read. Dra...

Worth a read, I thought I had my Facebook privacy nailed down but found out Meta was helping itself to my camera roll pics without ever asking for my permission 🤬

After a few years of lack-lustre growth of a mystery shrub in my garden (bought as a solanum, but clearly not that) it has suddenly produced a few berries for the first time and been revealed as a spindle berry. I could not be more thrilled!

This makes sense to me
I am increasingly convinced that the feeling of being unable to focus, procrastinating and being addicted to scrolling are often actually the feeling of being desperate to learn something new and difficult. To let your brain chew solid food.

‘Do Good Work’ is an insightful essay that tugs at the heartstrings . Thanks for the recommendation,Terri
I particularly recommend Marina Benjamin's book 'A Little Give: The Unsung, Unseen, Undone Work of Women' to anyone who wrestles with the competing demands of creative work and caregiving work. @ecatherine.com also wrote a good essay on this: ruadanbooks.com/do-good-work/

2.8m signatures, but rate of responses is slowing down. Let’s get this signed by as many people as possible and get Keir Starmer etc to think a bit harder about the fact that we pay them to do the will of the people. Pass it on!
