Open knowledge sharing AND copyright are both under siege. Whether you are for one or the other doesn't matter.

This is a shared issue that's hitting "both sides". They are taking away YOUR choice, replacing it with regurgitation & centralisation while the open internet withers away.

They are making it impossible to host information online and drying up resources. Stop defending and supporting these malicious entities.
Whether it’s cryptocurrency scammers mining with FOSS compute resources or Google engineers too lazy to design their software properly or Silicon Valley ripping off all the data they can get their hands on at everyone else’s expense… I am sick and tired of having all of these costs externalized directly into my fucking face. Do something productive for society or get the hell away from my servers. Put all of those billions and billions of dollars towards the common good before sysadmins collectively start a revolution to do it for you.

Please stop legitimizing LLMs or AI image generators or GitHub Copilot or any of this garbage. I am begging you to stop using them, stop talking about them, stop making new ones, just stop. If blasting CO2 into the air and ruining all of our freshwater and traumatizing cheap laborers and making every sysadmin you know miserable and ripping off code and books and art at scale and ruining our fucking democracy isn’t enough for you to leave this shit alone, what is?

If you personally work on developing LLMs et al, know this: I will never work with you again, and I will remember which side you picked when the bubble bursts.

This petition is not just for US citizens, but any Windows user around the world.

I've signed and I've uninstalled Windows from my computers.

Satya Nadella has pissed off the Clippy movement aka Louis Rossman and he's going to help people uninstall Windows in Austen Texas as well as have other members of the movement do so unless Microsoft agrees to give US citizens the same support as the EU has negotiated for their citizens.

Also if everyone stops using em-dashes due to people believing it's gAI. The models will start doing something else that stands out to the human eye. It will only be a temporary measure. What should matter is good writing.
707kat.bsky.social
Programmers do. 😂

But don't let 'em take your dashes!

I won't let them take my markdown or anything else that I love.
If people accuse you of using gAI, because of the em-dash, inform them that the use of those alone is not a tell on it's own and it's trained on human written text using em-dashes.

... so.... the Church across the street has it's port standing open wide with red light coming out of it and nobody is to be seen inside.

Should I be worried? Is this that rapture thing everyone has been talking about?
707kat.bsky.social
Yeah, that's usually the case. 😅
Here's to hoping that the virtual machines will be able to run those programs well enough soon.

I'm experimenting a bit with it, so if you'd like me to try whatever program it is you need/use (if possible) I can test it if you'd like?

If you are in the EU they have forced Microsoft to extend support.
I can still recommend familiarising yourself with linux as MS are forcing us into a more Chromebook like OS where you log on with online credentials and your data is uploaded to the cloud, invasive telemetry, commercials and AI etc.
Europe forces Microsoft into free extended support for Windows 10
Residents in the European Economic Area won't need to jump over any hurdles to get an extra year of Windows 10 security updates.

That sounds like a really sad modus operandi.

I hope that isn't it. I'd think if using those tools were so wonderful I'd be spending my time creating amazing things and using them for good to prove people I didn't agree with wrong rather than attacking them verbally on social media.
707kat.bsky.social
I completely get that. Especially if you've had multiple bad experiences in the past. Same for Olivia.

Oftentimes it isn't honest engagement. I've had people troll me continuously after I tried engaging and boy should I not do it if I'm having one of those days you just described. 😅

I meant to share this part of his thread, rather than the first one. Although all 3 posts are kind of great. He's trying to understand something he has limited experience with. And by doing so he is trying to understand and explain it in a language that might connect better with his audience.

they think of writing as work, and think well if i could get a magic box that did my work for me, of course i would use it. and they legitimately do not understand why some people are appalled by the idea of producing content with AI

in nature to why they don't get why artists, journalists, authors etc. who are revolted about seeing what they love being extracted and reanimated without the essence and craftsmanship put behind a labour of love.

So I try to bridge the gaps of understanding. Even if it sometimes prove futile.

i think the fundamental disconnect here, and i say this as an engineer without much creative talent, is that a lot of people who don't do creative things regularly (or ever) look at creative output (writing, music, whatever) as a product, and consume and experience it like a baby looking at a mobile

I believe you and Olivia when you say this. I can see the behaviour, but in my experience someone who is this persistent about something has a bone to pick of their own. Not necessarily caused by the person they are trying to pick it with.

I've had exchanges with people on X who found my point of-

We are not opining against new technology. We're opining against technology which main purpose is value extraction and the result is undermining human made work and knowledge.

opining against is a major drain on society overall. Not just on the individual. It's inefficient, servers little to no purpose and is unreliable.

Olivia even expressed this in one of her posts. The arguments you are using to talk to Anna she and I have seen a million times before and they don't-

I split AI into 3 non-mutually exclusive types (see Table 1 above): displacement (harmful), enhancement (beneficial), and/or replacement (neutral) of human cognitive labour. More later possibly, but see Tables 2 to 4 (attached or here: arxiv.org/pdf/2507.19960) for the worked through examples. 2/n

The problem here Brett is that both Anna and Olivia aren't speaking out and saying "all ai are bad". They are talking against a very specific kind of AI and the abusive systems behind it.

Most people don't have an issue with semantic search or ML used for specific tasks, but the kind of AI we're-

Really curious about what CabbageSystems is doing on r/SwordandSupper as well as the whole r/GamingOnReddit

Social Gaming embedded on Social Media Platforms is something I've experimented with on a very low-tech level, but was curious exploring more. Although I prefer it in closed communities.
