Sufficiency, climate action, and river restoration in the Finnish Northeast. I fly fish, hike, and ski. Looking at e-MTBs.

The winter gets postponed again. The worst weather is when the temperature seesaws around 0°C, it rains or slushes, and the whole day is dark. This is the typical #Winter climate in Fennoscandia in the future.

If I were 19 and willing to go for the hardest conscription training in the Finnish military, I'd try SOF training in border troops. Past twenty, maybe a bit of rescue service before that.

The Finnish Border Guard carries out both administrative and military tasks in all domains, peace and war. It is a hard choice for conscripts - most of my friends are involved so I tend to mention it

#Sufficiency in the Northeast never lets you just be content. I'm talking to this guy about a trip to his region mid-winter now. You always learn something from the military guys

The further north where most of the tourist traffic to Finland ends up in is not that different to where I live. I visit there a few times every year.

Often times I see the overtourism and come back to North Karelia with mixed thoughts - the Indigenous Sámi speaking the loudest to me.
The snow-crowned forests on the fell tops are pretty spectacular. My region has them too, albeit the fells are double as tall in the #Arctic - in the highest north, there are no trees just tundra.

The free #Gym twice a week has been the best rapid reaction to the midlife event by far, diet changes will work over time. I will miss some karaoke nights by not drinking.

2026 seems like a big operation now

Much forest skiing, some freeride skiing, maybe even salmon fly fishing on remote rivers.

"In 2023, there were more than 360 million SUVs on the roads worldwide, resulting in combustion-related CO2 emissions of 1 billion tonnes, an increase of around 100 million tonnes from the previous year."

Good luck with CCUS plants while growing cars and aviation.

I'm no carbon capture expert by any stretch but the now-greenlit Pathways #CCUS plant would theoretically remove 10 to 20 megatonnes of CO2 per year. For reference, we pump out on the order of *48,000* megatonnes per year (Canada's are ~700).

How nice, they had Rihma-1 available. One way to avoid AirBnB tourism is to belong to an outdoor club with traditional huts. You have to be able to use the outhouse at -30°C, so it's not for everyone. Clean up in a sauna.

Behind the sleigh bells➕huskies of "Lapland's" Christmas industry, the Sámi people struggle

Dog-sledding has little connection to Sámi or Finnish trad's➖yet it has become one of the most recognisable symbols of “Lapland” abroad. Indigenous Sámi culture is ignored or commodified for tourists. #Sápmi

Overtourism hits Rovaniemi, the fast-growing ”Santa” destination: locals are thrown out of their rentals so that landlords can make more money off short-term tourist stays.

It’s technically against zoning laws, but since it’s all about growth 🤷🏻‍♂️

This #Midlife choice was of the harder ones in addition to going for NA beers. Gym twice a week is the most fun.

I know far too many people who have been knocked off their bikes, and not once has it happened because of poor visibility or because they were not lit up enough. In each case, it was the fault of dangerous driving and/or dangerous infrastructure.
👀 Can you see me now?

The importance of visibility on our roads cannot be understated, particularly for vulnerable road users including pedestrians, cyclists, e-scooter drivers and motorcyclists.
