Watching REACHER and enjoying it but boy does it make me miss the days when Parker turned out Spenser novels like clockwork.

Spotify is running recruitment ads for ICE and their owner is helping to develop military AI. Maybe hit that "cancel my account" button?

Spotify is now running recruitment ads for ICE.

It’s time to cancel your account.

This is mainly about the economic impact that ICE is having on LA communities, but we’re inching ever closer to direct conflict between local and federalized forces, which would be … a bit of a rubicon.

To be clear:

LA County has declared a state of emergency BECAUSE OF the federal government.

The Feds, LA County is (correctly) saying, have CAUSED the emergency.

This is a striking political moment of internal collapse. Local govts feeling compelled to protect their ppl from … their own govt.

Los Angeles County officials voted on Tuesday to declare a state of emergency over ongoing federal immigration raids.

THE MONKEY is October film 12. Was looking for something like this: lighthearted and blackhearted all at once, this very loose Stephen King adaptation about a murderous cursed toy ends up being surprisingly philosophical.

This very much. Accountability for crimes better be a fucking reason to go to the ballot box. And fuck the norms. The only Norm I care about now is George Wendt.

My vote in the 2028 D primary for POTUS will hinge almost entirely on the % of this Administration they promise to imprison

Good. Even if this doesn’t work, it’s time to go on offense.

Ok but you’re at least going to burn your palate on them, right?

October film number 11: I finally saw THE SUBSTANCE, which was … a lot? Unlikely I’ll see anything more horrifying this month. Or year. Mixed feelings about the way the third act disintegrates but you can’t say the film’s not committed.

a foundational belief of the modern right is that there is no such thing as organic disagreement with their policies, it’s all directed from the top down

they just can’t conceive that ordinary people find them horrifying

Sean Duffy: "The No Kings protest, Maria, really frustrating. This is part of antifa, paid protesters. It begs the question who's funding it."

Goddammit, Magneto was right.

Not really sure what to do about that.

I’d say something about kids and the classics but this is someone who insisted on watching the Murnau NOSFERATU to prep for the Eggers.

And October film numero 10: READY OR NOT, another rewatch for me but new-to-kid: “Quite possibly the funniest movie I’ve ever seen.” Bad parenting choices, or is it really THAT funny?
absinthetics.bsky.social
October shenanigans number 9: HALLOWEEN (original flavor). Obviously a rewatch but new to the kid, who was home for the weekend. “Well… that was honestly middling,” was the review, which for modern sensibilities is probably fair. Big thumbs-up for the score though.

I think Trump honestly believes that if he won the Nobel Peace Prize they’d have to let him into heaven. Like the committee is pre-check clearance for the Pearly Gates or something.

“Can you explain this gap in your resume?”

Me thinking quickly on my feet to explain the period when I worked for ICE: “I was selling drugs… ,uh, to children.”

Some weirdo on Twitter has been absolutely melting down for like 36 straight hours because I posted:

When this is over, do not forget what ICE did, and what ICE is. And do not make room for them in society. Make sure they know that they are, and will continue to be, reviled and beneath contempt.

I know antifa isn't a real organization because I don't get 40 texts a week from them asking for donations.

October film fest 7 & 8: RUN SWEETHEART RUN and STRANGE DARLING, both date-gone-horribly-wrong films. RUN is lean and mean, where DARLING archly subverts expectations in a way that’s off-putting at first but eventually comes around.
