But we have to look beyond the individual leaders, grotesque and pathetic though they may be, to understand that we are witnessing the convulsions of history itself - the current system has exhausted its historical role, but there is no coherent movement to replace it.

What we as a species have to understand is that our leaders do not care about the consequences of war, which they (stupidly) believe will not touch them. They are willing to plunge our entire civilization into darkness so they can make some extra money.

The undisguised barbarism of our time didn't come from nowhere. It's the latest iteration of policies that go back decades, which politicians of every major party have supported. As the global crisis deepens, these policies become more crude and more obvious.
