(And thank you for the excuse to share that video of the show, which I have watched approximately 10,000 times)

Have fun! From my experience, Lowell is a very solid wrestling town. Had my favorite US experience at an NXT show there:

I've noticed the opposing team's fans only cheer when the opponents score on us. To win those fans over, I recommend we score on ourselves repeatedly; that will surely make them so happy they'll start supporting us. And I'm sure all our fans will keep cheering for us—who else is there to cheer for?

Which always makes it awkward, because language pendants love to think of themselves as "basically linguists" in a very narrow way (the same way tech CEOs think they're uncrowned physicists) and then they find out, uh oh, they're in the wrong part of town.

Yeah, the functional focus of EMCA also drew me in to start. Especially as we see people sorting things out together, in all sorts of ways, in real-time in the data. Without needing to consult the rulebook or call a judge to decide. Which makes pendantry look like trying to DM other people's games.

Conversation Analysis calls it "repair" when people fix misunderstandings, because the point of an interaction is for it to *work* for the current co-participants.

Anyway, have correcting this and getting repaired.

Here’s a primer on ‘primer.’

It’s pronounced ‘PRIMM-er’ if you mean “a small book” or “a short informative piece of writing.”

It’s pronounced ‘PRY-mer’ if you mean “an initial coat of paint.”

Besides linking Tylenol in pregnant women to autism, RFK Jr. now says circumcision is part of the reason why kids are autistic.

"Children who are circumcised early have double the rate of autism, and it's highly likely because they're given Tylenol. None of this is positive..."

Was just thinking about this one yesterday, which I never remember when people specifically ask for "Simpsons gags that live in your head"
Ned Flanders as a problematic child being observed for a social experiment. He is currently bullying another small child while shouting "Whee! I'm Dick Tracy! BAM! Take THAT, Prune-Face!" He immediately starts bullying another child, shouting "Now I'm Prune-Face, take THAT, Dick Tracy!" Finally he puts a third child in a headlock and shouts, "Now I'm Prune Tracy. Take that, Dick-" and is cut off by the researcher rushing in, shouting "Ned, stop it at once! Stop it!"

That mindset ended up being really helpful for any supervision, because there were always wonderful students who saw limitations as failures. But good research knows that limitations are inevitable, and it's a display of skill to identify where they are and work within them.

Yes! During my PhD I'd get the classic "so, how were exams?" questions at home, which helped me find my simplified explanation of what the task is: I'm writing an exam that I'll eventually have to take, and if it's too easy then I won't get credit, and if it's too hard then I won't be able to do it.

Writing a dissertation shouldn't be miserable and painful. If it is, seek support.

But writing a dissertation shouldn't be a cakewalk, either. It should feel challenging and at times it will feel insurmountable.

The latter isn't the former.

This message is for both students and advisors.

It's like Barney Gumble got turned into a bear.
Barney Gumble from The Simpsons. Particularly from the scene in Deep Space Homer where he gets a drink of (non-alcoholic) champagne to celebrate his graduation from astronaut training, his eyes get wide and his mouth slacks open as he portends: "it BEGINS"

"Dangerous criminals" so dangerous that you need to do Seal Team 6 cosplay to tackle into a funeral procession and grind their face into the concrete. But also if you fumble your zip ties enough times then it's perfectly safe to just leave them on that crowded street and speed off.
