"Yes! Rolls-Royce is repowering the new jet! Your initials are RR! It's perfect!"

This doesn't make capitalism the best we could possibly have it!

The problem is people are so used to socialism as a utopian pitch for freedom from contemporary wants that Hypothetical Utopia Socialism is compared to Extant Having to Administer Getting People To Do Necessary Jobs Capitalism.

A socialist society is still going to need to answer practical questions of administration dependent on scarcity, and that includes forcing you, the worker, to get out of bed and go off to do your socially necessary job whether you like or find it fulfilling, or not.

There are of course answers to that problem of "why do we have to spend so much of our lives doing things we do not want to do?" And "why can't we live the good life and experience more of the pleasures this world has to offer in our limited time here?"

Some are political. Many are *technological.*

Bluntly: you don't want socialism, you want robots doing the work so you can have more time for what we can broadly call "leisure."

There is nothing wrong per se with this desire, but intellectual honesty requires we admit that as it stands socialism will probably involve the same "get up at 7 am."

I hate to say it, but my experience as a Marine is that gender and sexuality are constructs.

One of the cliche things in Hollywood war movies that is actually quite accurate is that units of people that come from a diverse array of backgrounds have better decisionmaking.

God it's so cool that so much of British and European nationalist politics has broadly been shaped by warehouse clickfarms rented by guys in South Asia running "how to make money from racist old people" workshops, and that this has had more influence on media and politics than any grassroots group

Why must I, the protagonist of reality, deviate from my base preferences to accommodate the existence of other human beings? Clearly this is the fault of the profit motive

Sound = vibration & heat = death
the charming, clunky, visceral feel of military tech and mechanical devices from ww2 and earlier is basically the sound of them destroying themselves because they are badly designed and/or made
The British ran trials! They ran a m4a3 to death on mixed road and offroad marches, and it was impressively reliable, which meant it was ready to be scrapped at 3100 miles, and only needed 9 hours of maintenance every day

But tanks is cheating. Consider that the Red Ball Express of great fame consisted of running brand new 5 ton trucks comprehensively to death in about a week in a half

One thing an Afghan scholar told me was that while a lot of this has very old roots it also got way worse after the absolute clusterfuck of communist land reform in the 70s wrecked the old feudal structures without replacing it with new capitalist ones.

In AFG I found our unit needed its queer and women soldiers and advisors almost as much as needed its linguists (and Muslims and social studies majors!) just to know what the fuck was actually going on half the time.
My infantry Bn had a really hard time parsing the gender and sexuality issues of Southern Helmand.

When people say, "you wouldn't want a 'purple haired gender studies major' in the Marines" I reply "YES we desperately needed them!" We had teams of anthropologists who published studies for us.

Clean energy could've been a Moonshot moment for the US; vitalizing our economy, scientific tech dev, and patriotic pride. Instead we shoot ourselves in the foot while dooming the future to food insecurity and climate migration that will destabilize half the countries on the planet. We're idiots.

the economic success of the U.S. is significantly built on the land grant universities and in particular their excellent agricultural science tradition.
Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.

like people talk about movies that are made to make you feel smart

I don’t want that, I want the movie to make me feel dumb after a fair fight

I want to try to figure out where it’s going and to be defeated by the filmmaker’s superior power
