6 simple steps to reduce American leadership in science

1 - Lay off staff & rotators
2 - Try to reduce IDC
3 - Terminate & freeze grants
4 - Reduce programs & GRFP fellowships
5 - Propose a >50% FY26 budget cut
6 - Run merit review, without enough expert reviewers:

Heart-breaking.
It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.

BREAKING: ‘This hurts’: UNL eliminates 4 programs despite faculty, student pleas
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln eliminates the Earth and atmospheric sciences 8-0, educational administration 7-1, statistics 7-1, textiles, merchandising and fashion design 7-1 programs.

Good government, despite what rich people (and many newspaper columnists) think, is really hard and it’s really, really *particular*. It takes sustained expertise just to keep things from getting worse. Making meaningful improvements that help people’s lives isn’t intuitive.

UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini says nearly 42,000 Palestinians in Gaza have suffered life-changing wounds in Israel’s war – and almost one-quarter of those are children.

One of the most important storyline of the 21st is half of the american political spectrum losing their goddamn mind and being terminally detached from reality.
*More than half of the GOP believe the 2020 election outcome was the result of fraud
*More than 4 out of 10 believe 9/11 was an inside job
*37% believe the Holocaust did not happen or was exaggerate
*36% believe NASA faked the moon landing
*1 in 3 believe vaccines cause autism

- Generative AI supercharged data centre growth: lobbyist and substacker lines pretending like this is just streaming are false

- Even when you consider much of the projected growth is speculative, the *likely* projects are still MASSIVE

Hopefully, at a certain point in the future, there will be severe accountability for all the pain brought upon working people by these goons...

The second von der Leyden's term continues to be an unmitigated disaster on all fronts...
This would be funny if it weren't so tragic.

I've only looked at the "simplification" rules for data protection and they seem to be written by someone who doesn't understand the regulations in the first place.

It's not about disagreeing, irrespective of goals they're incompetent. 🧵

Very important point.
Let me try to answer this...

To be a scientist means to assume that there is more good than evil in the world, for why would you dedicate your life to inventing tools that will surely end up in bad people's hands as well? 🧵
