I read and loved She Who Became The Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan.

PSA: it's currently on sale on kobo for $3.99 which is less than 1 cent per page and money well spent.

Thanks to whoever recommended Louis McMaster Bujold; Curse of the Chalion and Paladin of Souls helped restore my faith in epic fantasy.

Another terrific article, this one from Kelli Underwood. Covers a lot of my regular gripes about how the AFL are mismanaging #aflw including venues, TV broadcasting, and scheduling. And finishes with a dig at HQ by noting they're changing nothing for next year.

Season 10 delivered thrills but the AFL should not be patting themselves on the back
We’ve come a long way since the history-making lockout at Ikon Park in 2017, but now isn’t the time for the AFL to sit back and pat itself on the back.

Some thoughts on last night's #AFLW Grand Final blockbuster (a thread).

First, the good:

1. What a fierce and amazing game. The result doesn't reflect how competitive Brisbane were for a lot of the game, but North were just too good. Fast and clean and tough and skilled. A joy to watch.

Terrific article giving some insight into why North's #aflw team are so far ahead of the rest. TL;DR? They take the women's game seriously and have invested.

Celebrating good women's sport scheduling (a rare phenomenon, are you listening #afl?)

On Sat night after the men's cricket test in Perth, most people walked back to the city past the WACA where a WBBL Scorchers game was just kicking off, everyone encouraged to come in and watch. #wbbl

My reading list trended more fantasy in October, not surprising after Conflux at the start of the month. Standouts were Freya Marske's latest Cinder House, and The Rook from Dan O'Malley.

Onya, ACCC.

TL;DR Microsoft tried to force subscribers to pay extra for CoPilot.

I was one of ‘more than 100’ people who complained to the ACCC about this. Knowing how few voices can make a difference, I will be complaining about lots more things in future.

In Yarraville today... a woman in pyjamas calmly waits for a train. Her hair and makeup is done, she’s carrying a bag as if on her way to work. A new fashion? Or did she just forget the bottom half this morning.

Such a good question: do we want public transport to BE safe or to FEEL safe? And the comments get into whether the unsafe view is driven by users or non-users, and how putting more security on PT can make it better and worse.
Do we want public transit to *be* safe or *feel* safe? This paragraph from an @opb.org article on transit security in Portland captures why this issue is so hard. Crime is way down since '20 but some people don't feel safe. Why? 🧵 1/

Inspired by Shohei Ohtani's best baseball game of all time (he’s both a pitcher and a batter, and on Friday nobody hit any of his pitches, and he hit 3 home runs) I'm rereading @catswrites.bsky.social's You Should Be So Lucky and it's heartwarmingly lovely.

There are many excellent consultancies who do great work and won’t use AI. Hit me up, I’ll give you some names (hint, none of the big 4 will be there)
Back in August several academics raised concerns that a Deloitte report to government may have been generated using AI. Deloitte denied this and put the citation errors down to poor editing.

Anyway, Deloitte are refunding the government $440,000 for a report that was written using AI.
