My colleague @jasmine-seo-200ok.bsky.social pitched this article to Moz after a few months as an SEO!

My favourite analogies are her bus numbers as server codes and JavaScript as house tech built on the foundations of HTML.

Something I don't get is how and why seemingly intelligent people like Geoffrey "Godfather of AI" Hinton peddle this crap. I instantly lose a lot of respect for such people.

My phone autocorrected to "Gooseberry of air" which is much more appropriate.

JPEG-XL has progressive display.

I've read it's better for colour reproduction than AVIF, and that's important given I'm a photographer and enjoy looking at photography. I think there were other photography-related reasons JPEG-XL beats AVIF.

JPEG-XL is an easy conversion from JPEG.
It's better than JPEG whereas webp sometimes is and sometimes isn't.
It wasn't created by Google (which in my experience seems to be the main reason webp was pushed).

I think it's more about a pure white background due to the glare it can cause? I find that more difficult to read so always use off-white for backgrounds.

I believe it makes it more difficult to read for some people with dyslexia too.

It's very annoying when websites hijack Ctrl+F, especially considering their own searches usually add to a poor user experience.

Lazy loading often breaks Ctrl+F too.

I see no harm in asking someone's opinion, especially in a place like NASA that has loads of great scientists.

While certain people take fiction too literally, sci-fi writers have value in this kind of thing IMO. I like this article from @emmanewman.bsky.social:

I'd just listened to the Edwyn Collins song "Low Expectations."
Google 'AI Overview' screenshot showing a gig start time as "7pm or 19:00" with the correct time of 19:30 shown in the Overview sources and first organic result.

The scale doesn't surprise me, but if scrapers were the reason, while I have reservations about all data, I didn't think Search Console data would be quite as bad as it was (and maybe still is).

I had hell with BT a few years ago and reported them to the Ombudsman* about 3 or 4 times.

*Which in itself was a massive waste of time for little result.
