the invasion of Afghanistan is among the most horrific recent chapters of the long history of elite impunity in the US. this coda is grim but fitting - the govt practically explicitly affirming that it should only be Afghans who live with the consequences amid fading public memory of the atrocity
It didn’t even take 6 hours.

We're gonna need a truth and reconciliation commission and Nuremberg style trials to reckon with all of this evil, and any Dem candidate for office who shies away from a full reckoning in the name of "moving forward as a nation" can get well and truly fucked

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

We’ve been sharing the fundraiser today, and the rationale and what we’ll do if funded are explained there and on the site, but I thought I’d do a thread here—on the supposedly failed social media platform to which we owe so much gofund.me/197477c3a

So @alexvitale.bsky.social, who wrote THE END OF POLICING (which I cite heavily in my forthcoming book THE OVERSEER CLASS), has been tapped to join Mayor-Elect Mamdani’s Transition Team to work on “community safety issues.”

This is an extremely promising development.

this is why people very far into the upper middle class should support building out a proper welfare state like @reprashida.govpeeps.us proposed the other day. you'd pay just a little for a tremendous amount of material security www.peoplespolicyproject.org/2025/11/20/r...
Rep. Tlaib’s Economic Dignity for All Agenda Would Bring Economic Security for Millions
The agenda would lower poverty by 42% and child poverty by two-thirds.

yeah, this too. people can be objectively swimming in material abundance, and still be one turn of bad luck away from bankruptcy and destitution bsky.app/profile/flee...
I think some people are confusing "poverty line" with "at what level of wealth/income do you need to be at to not get totally screwed by a health event or a major accident?" and the answer in the US is "very, very high"

childcare for instance is the second one. parents fund it out of pocket, meaning it's insanely expensive (bc of rising wages over time), but only for a couple years. it should instead be funded by everyone like K-12, spread the burden as wide as possible

yeah, this is much better. and it clarifies the problem he's talking about, which is not really about poverty as such, but that routine expenses are either wildly overpriced or poorly financed
United Way has a pretty decent annual report they put out showing the cost of actually living

As someone fairly plugged into overseas political commentary, it's so bewildering to hear journalists around the world plainly state that Starmer is a fucking disaster driving both his party and the country into the ground, then turn back to UK media, where his 13% approval is an eternal mystery.

i can finally talk about this! 20k more unredacted epstein emails available to journalists and researchers (there's lots of sensitive info in there and things like victims are not redacted)! this is the same trove bloomberg has been working with, which is different from the gmail dataset.
Epstein emails (2.5 GB)

Approximately 20,900 unredacted emails and file attachments sent and received by Jeffrey Epstein's [email protected] email address over nineteen years.

DOGE was created for data theft and infrastructure dismantling and it wildly succeeded on both counts within the first few weeks of its existence. It will take a generation to rebuild what it destroyed and the breach of data is unprecedented.
Bye bye, “DOGE”.

It no longer exists as a “centralized entity”, according to the Office of Personnel Management.

Difficult to overstate how profound a failure DOGE was. Spending in FY2025 was not only than in FY2024 – but higher than it was projected to be when Trump first took office.*

The little bit of spending DOGE cut has already killed hundreds of thousands and will eventually lead to millions of deaths.

My prediction is that he’s going to charm Trump to such an extent they have to spend a few days cleaning that up, and makes Vance look like a dipshit
