Pico is not a fan of Death Stranding

He doesn't mind when I'm walking around, but as soon as something scary happens, he flies across the room and makes alarm calls at the computer until I calm him down

It's weird to not only have lived through an information revolution but also now living through its undoing, all within less than a generation.
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

In case you’re wondering what’s contributing to inflation in 🇨🇦: corporate profits after tax now almost *3 1/2* times greater than just before the pandemic (2020 Q1).
Corporate profits before taxes in Canada hit a new peak in the 3rd quarter, rising 7.6% from the 2nd quarter, StatCan reported yesterday. The previous pre-tax peak was in 2022 Q2. Telecomm profits jumped an extraordinary $10.4 billion but these were mostly one-time non-operational gains. #cdnecon

the appetite for comics has literally never been greater, the profile has never been higher, and the talent has never been as varied and as interesting and we still don't pay people what their labor is worth!
"Let’s say 20 years ago the rate for a page of pencils was $150. People still get paid that."

My work is largely in the book market, buuuut yeah.

BOOM! recently reached out to offer an IP gig with the following rates:
script $50/page, pencils&inks $150/pg, colors $50/pg
The one about comic book page rates – again. News flash: Comic book page rates are STILL stagnant, after all these years, and for indie cartoonists it's even harder

95% of authors are not making a living through book publishing. The public needs to understand this.

As an author, I don't make a whole lot of money, but at the same time I need to read a lot of books to stay aware of trends and support my fellow authors. Obviously if I spend all my profits on other people's books, I'm not coming out ahead!

So: ways to read lots of indie books for cheap.

Unsolicited artist advice of the day: if you're a freelancer with no back up devices or storage, remember to pick a few things up in the black Friday sales. Even a pen drive to back up your projects so if you have a catastrophic hard drive failure you wont lose everything..learn from my mistakes. 😅

I talked to Joan Donovan about Twitter's very old foreign influence problem, which was unmasked in the funniest possible way over the weekend: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
Twitter's foreign influence problem is nothing new
The platform's just-debuted geolocation tool illuminates a disturbing and persistent issue.

If you like an author's work, the best thing you can do is buy it. The second best thing you can do is ask your local library to buy it. Or, do both!
A reminder that the median book deal for a debut author in the UK is £7000, paid over 12-18 months. (from 2022 Society of Authors report). Some of your favourite writers are struggling. societyofauthors.org/2022/12/06/a....

The second story in this episode of Unreserved is about a trans woman Indigenous poet who writes about growing up in the foster system. Powerful, short interview. The rest of the episode is about what it means to be Indigenous, in academia, as a Two-Spirit person, & more

I Indigenize it. I love gathering & eating with my in-laws, and as the only Native in their lives it's my responsibility to keep it relevant.

I make wojape with cranberries & choke cherries harvested by folx they love; we talk about how Thanksgiving food is Indigenous food & the first feast myth.
Actually in the spirit of this conversation, what’s a decision you made about a past Thanksgiving holiday that really paid off? I think people often feel trapped by their lives. Sharing our experiences can liberate us from that sense of claustrophobia.
On the most recent episode of VIBE CHECK, we answer listener questions about Thanksgiving, most importantly “do you go celebrate with the family members you don’t even like?”
