The US faces many threats, but I hope I'm wrong. Worst case : he doesn't need a violent coup, just to dismantle the existing structures on day one starting with recess appointments. If that is allowed to happen there won't be any governance left in place. No hearings = no checks, no balances.

As someone who spent the last 15 years working with aging brains & dementia, I can't stop thinking about this. It is gerontocracy: leaders who are substantially older than most of the adult population. When did we accept this? The new generations can't show up because the old generations never left.

The animating force at the heart of US conservatism currently is incandescent rage at the mere idea of women's autonomy and independence. An image of a smiling woman who looks insufficiently deferential for their tastes riles them up enough to tear up the social contract.
this is all it’s really about for them. Not domestic policy, not “economic anxiety”, just an endless desire to punish stand-ins for the Mommy who forced them take a bath, even if it tanks their own quality of life.

I can already tell that this is gonna be one of those movies that I evangelize about for the rest of my life.
Gus Van Sant has a new movie, Dead Man's Wire. You probably haven't heard of it. But you should seek it out. It's a brilliant movie that speaks to where we are right now, but is also a worthy successor to the 70s classics it emulates. Funny, surprising, compassionate. Big screen if possible.

If I’d been a student at a French school in the 1990s and heard this play at the end of every class, I’d have felt like I was in some low-budget TV series about a detective who investigates everyday, I gripping and yet disturbing mysteries in a small village in the mountains.
It seems this theme was broadcast at the end of each class in schools across the Paris region in the 1990s. So unresolved, so unsettling.

Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.
