It's a great film, and it might be worth checking out 'The Halfway House' as well, made the year before in 1944 and sharing some cast members including Mervyn Johns and Sally Anne Howes alongside Johns' daughter Glynis.

Old pic day (well, just found an 'old pic in a file' day really). Isabelle Kingdom Brunel
Isabelle Kingdom Brunel. An image I painted quite a few years ago of a gender-swapped Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It's based on the classic photographic portrait (by Robert Howlett in 1857) of the Victorian engineer taken against the huge launching chains of the SS Great Eastern.

A day in Ravenna, somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit & never thought I’d get to.

The pictures don’t come close to capturing the glitter & swash of the Byzantine mosaics… all over 1,500 years old.✨✨✨
Yep, that’s one & a half thousand.

…& couldn’t miss the grave of Dante 💜

My partner and I went to see Sarah Waters at an event in Chester a few months ago. She's a delightful interviewee! And I agree, Fingersmith would make a good graphic novel.

Sometimes I'll be working on a page and get frustrated by the composition or pose of a character or whatever, just not liking how it's turning out, like "Ugh, this is awkward, bad, amatuer, boring!" And then I remember; I'm the artist. If I don't like it, I can change it. So then I do.

George Herriman is arguably one of the first major black artists in comics.

And the only reason for that is because NO ONE KNEW HE WAS BLACK.

He was light skinned enough to be white passing & hid that fact into old age so that he WOULD be able to continue drawing largely due to rampant racism.

Seeing the Bill Watterson originals full of pencil lines of stuff that didn’t work, scuffs the eraser didn’t pick up, white out galore and more was something I needed to see to remind myself that nothing is perfect the first go and tweaks need to be made and you’re allowed to try again.

Disgraceful. Absurd. As with the Kimmel situation, politicians across the world want to suppress protest and creative resistance. They hate opposition. They hate protest. They hate satire. They hate art. Soon we will wake up and find our mouths gagged, our hands tied, our pens and laptops taken away

Mine too. I still have my copy. ‘The Secret of the Waiting Graves’ and ‘The Demon of Gothos Mansion’ are still two of my favourite Batman stories.

al parker is here to remind you that there's always something interesting you can do with patterns or color or staging.
Illustration by mid-century illustrator Al Parker. A woman in pearls and a dance-inspired outfit of tight sleeveless top with a big skirt, leans over the shoulder of her seated fella who is reading the paper. She's planting a big kiss on his forehead, thanking him for a box of chocolates. There are broad ares of flat color and pattern, with a few choice bits of rendering on heads hands and hair.

A tombstone in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, photographed by Andy Darby.

Note the border inscription.
Gravestone inscribed: Alistair Stephen Fabian Mitchell. 13-6-1957, 10-2-2019. Barrister of the Middle Temple. My brain, socialist. My heart, anarchist. My eyes, pacifist. My blood, revolutionary.

Around the edge, the legend: The only man in British legal history to be convicted of biting a policeman with someone else’s teeth.
