Your regular reminder that the first sentence of every Law of Warfare class from basic training on is that "I was just following orders" is not a defense.

Kinda wish I had gone way into debt in my 20s, since buying a building and a home's worth of appliances and clothing at age 23 is the only way I can think of to have nice things in my 40s and 50s.

Every frigid day like this, I think about this 2022 piece by @katieprout.bsky.social. No one should have to be outside today in Chicago, much less staying outside unsheltered overnight. That that might be preferable to the available shelter is incredibly damning.

Dad (WWII vet, teacher) told me the day SCOTUS created Home Schooling, to remember the day because it was the day the USA died. I’d be able to trace all public ills back to that day when Americans stopped learning together.

Maybe you already know, but it was recent news to me:

Illinois residents can track their vaccinations online. Mine doesn't go back to childhood, obviously, but does go back as far as my tetanus booster in 2011.

yes to this
I don't want to be surrounded by people who share my opinions. I want to be surrounded by people who share my values.

See, it's entirely possible to believe in something and fail to live up to it. And one thing I appreciate, both On Here and irl, is those people who will kindly and firmly check me.

The relationship between cities and cars needs dramatic rethinking.

Cars are not inevitable, nor are they essential to city life.

We shouldn't be mowed down in our neighborhoods.

An SUV driver was cited for failure to reduce speed after fatally striking a man, 34, near Pratt/Sheridan in Rogers Park. This tragedy is a reminder that Sheridan, a 4-lane, highway-like street, badly needs a "road diet."

What you're gonna want to do, see, is find a lady selling champurrado from a small cart --preferably out in front of a Catholic church, but any pedestrian-heavy area will do.

... War on Education for longer than I've been alive
...have to master content before you can effectively teach it
...reading comprehension & writing skills
...garbage in garbage out
becoming a really good writer is an extensive and lengthy process that also requires reading very widely

the thing about inventing LLM tech that relies upon natural language to function is that it becomes even more important that the humans doing the prompting are good at using natural language

there’s a lot of irony around how writing a genuinely good prompt for LLMs requires the exact kind of clarity and precision in communication that is taught by good (human) writing instructors - who have now almost all been laid off by college admins

Continuing to insist we must "earn a living" while simultaneously reducing our ability to earn anything at all is not a viable social contract and is how to get people to start building guillotines instead of resumes.

It's universal basic income and healthcare or things pop off.
