What do we know about the judge who approved the warrant? The warrant was approved by Magistrate Judge Catherine Salinas. Magistrate judges are not appointed by the president, but rather by the bench of the district in which they serve. Salinas has been serving in her position since 2015. Her credentials appear to be impressive and, if anything, somewhat liberal from a political standpoint. According to the State Bar of Georgia, she received her undergraduate degree from Emory and her law degree from the University of Texas. Early in her career, she worked as an attorney with Texas Rural Legal Aid along the Mexican border and later, upon returning to Georgia, with the Fulton County Public Defender. She clerked for U.S. District Judge Willis B. Hunt, Jr., who was appointed by President Clinton. Prior to her judicial appointment, she spent ten years as a commercial litigator. She’s a past president of the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and currently chairs the state bar’s Access to Justice Committee.

So what can be done about all of this? To begin with, state and local election officials need to be ready to go to federal court to seek injunctions barring the government from seizing voting machines or otherwise interfering with the process of tabulating ballots. Trump might even try to send troops to seize ballots without a search warrant, and if that threat is real, proactive judicial action is necessary. These threats are most likely to materialize in those areas around the country with contested congressional races. Particular targets may be in those states, such as California and Arizona, where the tabulation of ballots takes a long time, so there is more time for Trump and his allies to act. State officials and the public need to support, with dollars and volunteers, election administrators and those who would hold the line against interference. The greater the transparency of the work of these administrators in tabulating ballots, and the quicker a fair count can take place, the harder it will be for Trump to have a legal excuse to try to interfere with the balloting.

The time to prep for similar shenanigans from the feds in 2026---before ballots are fully tabulated and any recounts/contests done---is now.
