the "dissonant = ugly" equivalence is based on the
experience of physical dissonance, "sounding-apart" , but it is ..mm.. put forward with an aesthetic judgement, and so by proximity the meaning of the term "dissonance" gets transferred to "ugly" (edited)
it is dissonant because the resulting sound
"struggles", and it is not as easy to comprehend instinctively (this says schoenberg) as simpler mmm sound-mixes (edited)
but i think it is important not to conflate consonance with beautiful and dissonance with ugly
because the whole reason we even got counterpoint was thanks to going "up" more harmonics and being more dissonant
more sounding-apart
which gives stronger independence of voices!!! otherwise we'd still be singing in fifths

well, in my day to day my knowledge abt how to make ppl laugh and how to surprise ppl in music, both converge a lot lol

really all of it is patterns and their expectations and knowing when to break them. almost playing mind games..
