My Advanced Pop Transcription class at NYU is creating new instrumental backing for the acapella to "Harder Better Faster Stronger" by Daft Punk. To inspire them, I thought I would make a version or two myself. But once I got started, I couldn't stop. ethanhein.bandcamp.com/album/harder...

Same goes for musicians. I understand how it seems embarrassing to admit you have a job or rich parents or a gainfully employed spouse but the kids coming up need a sense of reality about how things work.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

I went to look up "Rock and Roll" by the Boswell Sisters to hear how it sounds without @andrewhickey.500songs.com on top of it and the YouTube comments are killing me www.youtube.com/watch?v=6b5o...

To simplify: the thing that made American higher-ed unique was the institutional organization around education as a PUBLIC GOOD, rather than as an elite training ground, or job training.

This aspect is nearly dead, killed by a thousand budget cuts.
Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.

Trump frickin' loves this guy lmao

This is correct. Any pleasantly jangly harpsichord and/or Celtic harp music will suffice
When I worked at a bookstore, I quickly learned that people cannot tell the difference between Xmas music and any Baroque or Elizabethan music album that doesn't get too organ-ish. I used this to my advantage.

One customer caught on... AND THANKED ME
If we had to hear “Baby Shark” everywhere we went for two whole months out of the year we’d throw a fit, right?

And rightfully so.

So tell me, why do we put up with it when the song is “Frosty the Snowman”?

So, you know, there’s the means of production. And I said well, you should seize it. And he said, sir, we’re going to seize it right now. He was very nice, very kind, and you know the bourgeoisie are not good people. Very bad people.
Trump in a room with a very charismatic person results in like half a day of Trump agreeing with everything that person said, so this has the potential to be very, very funny.
Trump says he’s meeting with “communist” Mamdani at the White House on Friday

What is going on
Reporter: Are you affirming that you think the president is a fascist?

Mamdani: I've spoken about --

Trump: Just say yes, it's easier than explaining.

A reporter asks if Mamdani stands by calling Trump a fascist. Mamdani starts to give a delicate answer.

Trump (smiles, pats Mamdani's arm): "That's OK, you can just say yes. It's easier. I don't mind."

A problem with climate change politics is that people don't intuitively grasp exponential functions. It would be good to have some tools to help with that. Universal Paperclips is a good one, what else is there?
