Here for democratizing science, broadening participation, meeting climate and energy challenges and rising up Appalachia. And of course nerding on rocks. Prof. of Geology at West Virginia University with a penchant for sedimentary rocks. Opinions all mine.

Antarctica's tiniest climate witnesses are changing 🦠
Climate is reshaping Antarctic phytoplankton, impacting carbon storage and the marine food chain. 25 years of ESA Climate Change Initiative satellite data paired with 14,000+ in-situ samples reveal how. Learn more: climate.esa.int/en/news-even...

This morning Minnesota woke up to news of a brutal act of violence targeting public servants. I am heartbroken to learn that our Speaker Melissa Hortman, Sen. John Hoffman and their spouses have been shot.

@mcuban.bsky.social its everywhere. Go to any local school board meeting or community action group. Pointing it out won’t stop it. This is the air we breathe now. The big challenge is to progress in spite of it.

Watch the slow motion: it appears to me that the officers discuss the photographer and reporter before the one on the end fires on them (it looks to me like he's aiming at the camera, not the reporter, but you decide)

Senator Ted Cruz posted a dramatic video of LAPD cars on fire with the caption “this… is… not… peaceful.” What he didn’t mention? The footage was from 2020, not 2025. His post on X falsely implied it was current, part of a broader effort to spread lies and manufacture a crisis.

Lots of talk today about the demise of BlueSky. For whatever it's worth, it's been a boon to indie publishers like us. Twitter and Facebook have pretty much silenced us, so the engagement here has, and continues to be, wonderful.

A box model diagram, showing a 3D "wedge" of landscape. On the model, each talk is represented. There is a city and a lignite mine in the background, with some horses on the far mountain. The meandering river is dammed, and has sandmining, subsidence, and anthropogenic alteration along the beach. A spit and lagoon, island, and reef represent the other fascinating coastal talks. In the foreground is a deep sea corer, and to the right of the image are mined tunnels and some surface spoil heaps. Each feature is labelled with the time at which the equivalent talk occurs, details of which may be found in the programme.

Escape from politics is the epitome of privilege. What do we owe those for whom there is no escape? We owe them to face discomfort and do better

Record SMASHED
amyrocks.bsky.social
The record for the longest filibuster was set by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (SC). He spoke for 24 hours 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

He was one of many senators who filibustered for 57 days up until the Civil Rights Act was passed on June 19, 1957.

Hope to see this broken today.

Hi, BlueSky. It's Hillary.

I've joined up here to help get the word out about an important election in Wisconsin tomorrow, and other ways to defend our democracy against those who think votes can be bought.

@nicolefoy.bsky.social HSI/ICE went around Morgantown WV the past couple days and took many people from our community, mainly poor restaurant workers it seems . It’s hollowed out our town even more that has already been hit by closure of Viatris, RIFs at WVU, and federal agency RIFs. 💔
