One thing I plan to have going forward is some business cards for the Museum. For those wanting help donate items or to contact me and such. Here's some links for that here:

Another laserdisc came in today. This time it's the first episode of Giant Robo from 90s outfit LA Hero.

From a cursory search, i've found release date listings for the first and second Pretty Sammt OVA episodes on US laserdisc under the label of "Tenchi & Friends Special" but didn't bother with the 3rd episode. Go figure.

Mailbag Day!

Believe it or not, it's more Tenchi! Near the end of the OG 90s OVA release from the US and also cane across the second episode of the Pretty Sammy spinoff OVA too. More US laserdisc releases are also on the way to me over the next week. So stay tuned for more!
Two anime laserdiscs. On the left is Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki episodes 10 and 11. On the right is the second Pretty Sammy episode.

just to add my two cents about physical media - your favorite website, streamer, or online archive could vanish tomorrow due to any number of deliberate or accidental actions on the part of any number of people or organizations. Physical media? You have to destroy it YOURSELF
rollin.bsky.social
Counting just DVDs and up – not VHS or digital purchases – I have 493 movies and TV shows on physical home video.

I'm not saying you should be where I'm at. But I am arguing you should consider getting closer.

I think I’ve now seen proof of a rounded-slipped copy of Cyber City Oedo 808 in a blurry photo on a Japanese auction site (and of course I forgot to save it before the page went down)

This almost certainly means another stealth re-release is out there. If you stumble across a copy, post pictures!

It appears that Discotek did stealth updates to the non-Steelbook release of Angel Cop (and maybe Cyber City Oedo 808). It now ships with the Remastered disc out of the Steelbook. Far as I can tell, only way to tell it apart is a rounded slipcover and not saying "Enhanced from SD" on the back

Replaced the case for Dirty Pair TV and it's a perfect fit and no more stacked discs.

Speaking of Urban Vision, does anybody know the story behind the “American Anime” badge on some of their releases? Was it a separate company? Just a label? I can’t find any info on it.
Spine of a vhs tape, showing the urban vision and American anime logos. The American anime logo is a triangle with a little squiggly thing on top.

I've made this mistake of trusting a wiki before with "VHD was advertised in National Geographic in 81/82".

Looked through every issue from those years and nothing at all was there. Sam is going above in beyond in some wonderful research into the anime industry and fandom.

Uhhhhhh...

OK... so story time. When researching for my book, I went out of my way to not reference wikis, because they're not trustworthy. In some cases this resulted in me dropping $100, $200 on old magazines for sales data, because I didn't want to fuck up.

Seeing this get published saddens me.

Something a little different today, but I scanned an 8 page issue of Toei's New Disc Press advertising pamphlets from summer of 1996. This was in the sleeve of one of the Tenchi laser discs I got recently. Scanned at 600 DPI.

Here's something special I've wanted to get uploaded. A rip of the staff audio commentary from the original laser disc release of Belladonna of Sadness, featuring Eiichi Yamamoto, Ken Fukai, Gisaburo Sugii, and Atsushi Tomioka.

Please note, this is in Japanese only.

Guess I'm in a Tenchi Muyo! mood these days. Mihoshi Special US laserdisc and the DVD set for Universe acquired recently.
animevidmuseum.bsky.social
Also always found it funny that Funimation provided this layout explaining Tenchi's messy continuity (or lack thereof). Granted, I do think Tenchi in Tokyo needs to be further removed from the rest; in a black hole.
animevidmuseum.bsky.social
No clue if the Mihoshi Special had the usual sticker on the shrink wrap or not like the other OVA discs, they didn't even bother with a translated back sleeve either, but the inserts are in English.

Also iirc Tenchi Universe did get a SD on Bluray release in Japan not too long ago.

Got something exciting in the mail today: a copy of Captain Harlock V1 on VHS from FHE *in decent shape!*
I believe this is a later print run, based on the MGM sticker on the back, and the use of a Disney style case inside instead of a flimsy plastic tray.

Now to find V2…
(Cyborg 009 VHS for scale)
Captain Harlock and Cyborg 009 VHS tapes next to each other. The Harlock one is massive Backs of the tapes, showing a clumsily applied Distributed by MGM/UA sticker on the back The VHS case itself, which is totally blank other than a Harlock sticker The inside of the VHS case, showing the tape (with an oversized sticker) and a cutout for a Betamax version
animevidmuseum.bsky.social
The Tenchi Muyo tape in the clamshell contains the first three episodes of the original OVA from it's Toonami TV edit. So it's before episodes 4 and 5 with the infamous digital bikinis added to the girls.

Recently received a cool donation of some sealed VHS promo copies of some early 2000s Pioneer releases and a Manga Entertainment preview tape too.

Thanks to @professorotaku.bsky.social and his friend Brian for these!

This is why it's always best to try and verify these things and never take a wikipedia page at it's word. Someone's half-remembered thought can just be posted and go unverified for nearly 20 years (this edit was added in 2007). It's removed now, thanks to my rainy day boredom.
