I went to hear Eva Illouz speak at the Jewish Museum in Vienna, after her Rotterdam event was cancelled. The museum even opened on a day it’s normally closed to host the talk. (They proudly mentioned this extraordinary opening.) It’s harder for Palestinian voices to find comparable platforms.
A reminder that cancellations due to political pressures happen all the time, and they are not restricted to one issue or side.
If you don't want it to happen to you, speak about it when it happens to people you disagree with.

On the justification: “Academic freedom is of paramount importance; in this case, however, there were doubts as to whether the event met the necessary academic standards.”
The LMU announces the cancellation of a seminar on the topic "the targeting of Palestinian academia". The cancellation announcement is titled "LMU as a place of pluralistic discourse". Couldn't make this up.

Therapists say that private issues spill over into all areas of life. I sometimes wonder how many world crises (& workplace conflicts) arise from leaders projecting their private insecurities onto everyone else turning inner turmoil into collective problems. In Hitler's case, millions suffered.

At risk of stating the obvious, the "economics mentor" highlight distracts from what he immediately says next.

He is going to "cut off contact."

Which is to say he is withdrawing professional support because she declined to fuck him.
The emails have Summers reporting to Epstein about his attempts to date a Harvard economics student & to hit on her during a seminar she was giving.

Summers famously blamed the lack of women in economics and STEM on our supposed stupidity, saying we lay the IQ points].

But as these emails show, he personally was expecting female students to have sex with him in order to advance in their careers.

I suspect he did not expect this of men.

A careful study of every populist episode since 1900 finds catastrophic consequences, which play out slowly.

On average, incomes fall behind by nearly 15% over 15 years.

For the U.S., this is a cost of about $13k per person per year. Over a lifetime, that's million bucks.

No, I will not save the dates. I know it's not simple, but either the AEA starts holding the annual meeting at a reasonable time of the year, or I'm afraid it will continue to wither away, now that we have mercifully stopped the crazy business of having in-person job interviews in hotel rooms.
ICYMI, save the dates for the 2026 ASSA Annual Meeting to be held January 3–5, 2026 (Saturday, Sunday, Monday), in Philadelphia, PA. Registration opens on September 9, 2025. Learn more at aeaweb.org/news/assa-20.... #econsky
