Humorously: In celebration of being cast as Osric in @bumblebearcreations.com’s Elcor Hamlet, I commissioned my friend @leondoodlez.bsky.social to draw an Elcor Osric.

Genuine endorsement: You should definitely commission Leon, they do great work.

Canada Post “lost” 1 billion dollars last year?

How about, “it cost Canadians 1 billion dollars to have a national postal service” which works out to costing about $25 a year per person (population of Canada in 2024 = 40 million). Seems like a pretty reasonable cost to me.
julieslalonde.bsky.social
"Canada Post is on track to lose money" Hum. Duh. It cost less than a toonie to send a letter across Canada.

"Canada Post is a service and not a business" was common knowledge until late stage capitalism brain rotted most people into think if it ain't making money for shareholders, it's failing.

#beginnerartclub - Stylisation 🗿

Whatever your skill level we'd love to see your attempt.
Let's practice and grow our skills together!

Use the # tag &/or QRP your submission so that we see it!

We got some great advice last week, if you have good tips/tutorials for stylisation please share them!
#beginnerartclub
-Stylisation-
1 - Choose a reference
2 - Draw it
3 - Push and simplify
4 (+) - Repeat step 3 until it breaks!

The page includes a little doodle of a 'realistic' face, then a very cartoonish version of the same face as an example of the exercise.

PUSH means make big shapes bigger, small chapes smaller, curves curvier and straights straighter.
SIMPLIFY means removing any elements that don't tell a story including excess shapes, lines, details, or shading.

The goal of this exercise is to end up with a hyper-deformed drawing like a chibi or a newspaper cartoon character 4 pose drawings of a woman in urban clothes holding a long sword and doing a high kick. Each drawing is more stylised than the last for the purpose of art study.

The first drawing is an attempt at realism, the proportions are natural and the clothes and hair show natural folds and gravity. Her jeans are cosmetically ripped in several places and she has a jacket tied around her waist. Her pose is very balanced, with her arms and knee close to her torso to maintain a centre of gravity.

The Second drawing is meant to be akin to a comic book or anime drawing. The head is about double the size, the kick and sword are further outstretched and the hair is flowing backwards to give an impression of momentum. The creases and rips in the clothing are now just a few simple, larger shapes.

The third drawing could be like a western TV animation. The head is smaller than intended because I didn't leave myself enough page. The legs are shorter, the hands and eyes are larger, the hair is fully blowing back, the kick angle is much longer. The details on the shirt and jeans are removed, and the jacket is spread much wider and hanging lower.
Her chest is smaller, and I probably could have eliminated the indication altogether and relied solely on the shape instead.

The final drawing is chibi proportions, her head is the same size as her body, her hands and boots are much larger, her kick is straighter and higher. her legs are shorter. She no longer has a visible breast shape, neck or shoulders, and her hair has been simplified down to a single thick ribbon, except for the single long strand over the ear which emerged as a prominent characteristic simply because I simplified every other part of her hair.

This 61 card deck is ~3"x5" (~12x7cm) for easy, on the go facial expression reference. There are 31 cards each with a front female facial expression on the front and the same expression from 3/4 and profile on the back of the card. The remaining 30 cards have male expressions in the same format.
Various cards with images of a white woman and white man's face on each, spread out over a wooden surface.

I've always wanted to be one of those people with a sketchbook to flip through full of drawings😂. My goal is just to WANT to draw again since I've been enduring art block for several months. This helps with both those things😈

I like that you practiced the ribbons. I felt that the commentary on ribbons and tubes from the video was quite helpful😁

This week's prompt was hair. There are things that are definitely easier done digitally but I'm finding these traditional practices much more satisfying and enjoyable.
Sketches done with pencil to practice drawing hair. Curly, short and choppy, a long braid and a sleek ponytail.

Quote with your strong woman art!
A portrait of Sinead O'Connor. She is drawn in monochromatic blue. Her head is down cast as she mourns the crimes and injustices against women and children. I gave her a golden halo for her bravery, speaking out on her platform during the height of her career. I made the halo look like crosshairs because the church basically cancelled her for speaking out against them and trying bring attention to what they had been hiding. RIP.

Heavy Head

A fragile creature with its head cocooned in chains and hanging maces. The weight resembles its mind loaded with thoughts it can't escape from. If listen closely, one can hear a silent crying.

Doesn't move much, can cause minor damage if gets approached too close.

Thanks😁. I feel like stylization is the natural next step in my artistic evolution😈🦋. I think part of my art block is related to being bored with what I can do.
