“Doctor, Doctor! I’m in need of someone to explain to me the complex interrelated identities projected onto the figure of King Arthur between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries!”

The latter to me is no great loss — everyone involved in that group chat should be nowhere near cricket. It’s a source of constant frustration!

Justine Pelletier, je me souviens TABARNAK
A screenshot of Justine Pelletier’s beyond audacious dummy for Canada’s first try against NZ tonight. Over her I have laid the word “me”, over the Black Fern player I have written “my thesis”, and in the space Pelletier is about to run into, I have written “watching Canada win RWC 25”

You might assume “Anglo-Saxons” is a simple phrase with a simple meaning, but it’s meant various things during the past centuries. This is a brilliant open-access summary of those evolutions by Prof Rory Naismith @rorynaismith.bsky.social

so in NYC “bagel” means an NY-style bagel

in Montreal “bagel” means a Montreal-style bagel

outside NYC and Montreal, “Montreal-style bagel” means a more or less decent impression of an NY-style bagel and “NY-style bagel” means an English muffin with a hole in it

Side note: I’m really fun at parties
ascolotl.bsky.social
This is true at parties, it’s true at pubs, it’s true of talking to close friends, it’s true of talking to family. Obviously I don’t read verbatim but it is a good reminder that a) these tales were designed to be heard by audiences and b) they’re very good at playing to the strengths of that format.

An anecdotal but entirely true thing: as someone who studies medieval romance, I spend a lot of time retelling medieval romances. I have never yet failed to get the reaction I/the plot am/is seeking.
