Problem faced. Policy applied. Policy worked. Politics can work.
For the first time ever, London has met legal limits for nitrogen dioxide.

When I became Mayor, we were told it would take 193 years. We did it 184 years earlier than expected.

Cleaner air means a healthier city and big savings for the NHS.

The last one for now in my ‘Back to School’ series on Inclusion. This is one for leaders leading school improvement in challenging circumstances. Sometimes the simplest answers are right in front of us streamlinedsendco.com/2025/09/09/l...
Learners and Families: The value of feeling heard
One of the most demanding- and often draining- elements of a senior or pastoral leaders’ role are the meetings with parents, carers or families that challenge us[1]. Many of whom have long been bou…

Another highlight was @nimishlad.bsky.social who asked us if a model of learning was enough? I was left wondering what we lose when we condense things and talked by his call to prioritise coherence over consistency

Next at Research Ed I saw @daisychristo.bsky.social sharing her insights on whether or not AI in education is worth the hype. Some very interesting findings re assessment and a crucial reminder of the importance of keeping the human in the loop

Inspired to hear @olicav.bsky.social talk on The Professional Mind at Research Ed yesterday. He offered so many interesting provocations, my favourite being ‘Are you allowed subjectivity in cognitive science?’

Profoundly unhelpful and flat out untrue. No parent would endure the misery of the ECHP system unless they felt it was really necessary.

Provision Mapping: How does it work and why should Leaders care about it?
In Beyond Boundaries: Leading Great SEND Provision Across a Trust (2024) edited by Natalie Packer and David Bartram[1] I set out my approach to provision mapping, why I think it is at the heart for…

Another one in the Inclusion Series, about how to line manage SENDCos well. It's mostly just me saying 'read The SEND Code of Practice' in several different ways but there is a resource at the end that leaders might find helpful.

Leading and supporting SENDCos: A practical guide for those that line manage SEND
As a SENDCo I was often frustrated by the lack of domain specific knowledge- about the realities of the role of the SENDCo and the expectations as set out in The SEND Code of Practice- of those abo…

NEW POST

The second in my series on Inclusion exploring my notion of Radical Inclusion (which is really just placing Inclusion at the heart of everything, which shouldn't be radical at all).

streamlinedsendco.com/2025/08/30/r...
Radical Inclusion
The term ‘radical’ has roots. Literally. It comes from the Latin radix, meaning “having roots”. Entering Middle English, the word radical came to be used to mean “fundamental or inherent”. The noti…

Inclusion is on everybody’s lips right now. From Ofsted to Government, the edu-sphere seems keenly aware we have a problem with SEND and inclusion. Survey after survey indicates that teachers and l…

Whilst my blog is entitled streamlined SENDCo, I’ve rarely written explicitly about the nuts and bolts of leading SEND. Over the next weeks I will publish a ‘back to school’ toolkit to support those leading SEND and Inclusion provision to do so intentionally, holistically, effectively & sustainably.

An excellent article with a careful argument
Are we ‘dumbing down’ teaching? Sam Gibbs argues that if we want critically engaged young people, then we need to divert from our current path and put intellectualism at the heart of our profession
How we dumbed down teaching - and what we must do to fix it
Over the past decade, teaching has been pushed towards a prescriptive model that reduces intellectual curiosity and overlooks essential classroom engagement, argues Sam Gibbs

If AI is being used extensively in office jobs, then should we be letting students use AI in the classroom?

No - here's why.

With reference to 3 papers that show what you do in a job isn't the template for what you do in the classroom.

This! Desirable difficulty is absolutely critical to any learning process. AI often makes it too easy. However, the reflective process is just one purpose of writing. Where I think AI can really help us in education is getting us clear on what the purpose of the tasks we ask our students to do.
Writing things by yourself is thinking out loud really. We definitely don't want to stop thinking, do we? 🤷‍♀️ #AI #EduSky

1. I have not seen a better analysis of the current state of the SEND system than this. @pepsmccrea.bsky.social points to some interesting potential drivers of these problems and suggests what teachers might do about it.
Despite best intentions and significant investment, England’s SEND system is failing too many students and their families. To fix it, we need to understand why.
