Sportswriter-turned-science communicator — here for a strange mix of posts about both. Formerly @awolice on Twitter.

NJ native in Baltimore. 🫖 fanatic. @washingtonspirit.com season ticket holder.

I'm still upset about the '01 World Series.
I say this as both a @washingtonspirit.com fan and as someone working in leadership communications: today's thank-you letter from Michele Kang to Spirit fans is top-notch. I don't know that a post-season email from any sports franchise has ever made me tear up like that.

Okay, I was very sad and also angry about all of Sonnett’s flopping (+ the fact that Gotham should’ve played a huge chunk of that game down a player). But I gotta say… trekking to DC to catch the final match at a bar with a whole bunch of friends was the right call. ❤️

This is the flip side of the substitution: the Spirit have had an unshakable faith in one another, it's where all those last-second game-winning/equalizing goals came from this year.

Definitely easy to say "make the sub" for media as outsiders, we don't have those same bonds with that group.
That decision to make the sub in the moment is absolutely going to be talked about for a minute but in the grand scheme of things the unity this team has is a product of what Gonzalez has done this season and i look forward to what he will be able to do with this team in 2026

and!!!! The second yellow card that wasn’t. This game should’ve looked so different.

The Spirit players so clearly love each other, their fans and DC. They have earned better!
Scored on in the final last year because a *clear* foul wasn’t called, scored on in the final this year because we didn’t sub off in time.

You really, really gotta feel for the players.

Do we have the technology to get a news cut-in but with John Oliver?

Magnificent.

I think we all need Tom Holland doing his umbrella routine. We deserve a little treat.

Both teams travel schedules a bit earlier than the norm (in a good way). NWSL end of season awards show on Wednesday night, then media day thurs, pressers on Fri, game on Sat
On this front for the Spirit, I'm told they'll train in Leesburg on Tuesday, then fly to California afterwards.
Gotham is spending the night in Orlando and will head straight to the Bay Area tomorrow. They packed ahead of time just in case. Training schedule to come.

It feels unreal to see crowd alerts on the Metro signs for a Spirit playoff match. Four years ago, it was so empty for the semifinals. What a difference well-deserved investment can make. #VamosSpirit

Did anyone *actually* successfully get presale tickets to see Hayley Williams at the Lyric in Baltimore? I can't figure out if they sold out the whole venue or if there's also going to be a general ticket sale time to make another attempt.

@mta.maryland.gov what’s with the Light Rail? I don’t see any service updates anywhere but there are only trains to Penn Station and they’re few & far between. Is this fire related?

I'm shocked. Despite living in MD/DC since '07, I listen to WMMR nearly every day (including today). Just after the Jan. 6 attacks, Pierre read my letter about the Foo Fighters' "Waiting on a War" on-air & I was lucky enough to record it. So grateful I did. www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/r...
WMMR's radio legend Pierre Robert has died
Legendary rock radio icon Pierre Robert from 93.3 WMMR was found dead inside his home on Wednesday, officials said. He was 70 years old.
