A parcel arrived from Shepherd’s today, so I think I’m all set to start trying to learn bookbinding…

I don’t suppose anyone has an old iron book press sitting around they’re not using and might like to sell me for cheap? 😘

Worth reading: “… a fall in net migration of 300,000 a year would increase the deficit by about £20 billion. The government are already having to make unpopular tax rises and spending cuts in the upcoming budget, but would have to make more if the deficit increases.”
'Net migration will fall very sharply in future years... Any political benefit the government may gain from this fall in immigration could be jeopardised by the economic damage that it causes'. Some eye watering estimates here from @jamesbowes01.bsky.social ukandeu.ac.uk/the-coming-c...
The coming collapse in immigration to the United Kingdom - UK in a changing Europe
James Bowes analyses the fall in net migration to the UK as a result of government policies and explores some of the political and economic consequences.

And just in case you want to work out how close a relation a cousin is... absolutely no need to do so if you don't want to but for those who do:
First cousins share grandparents
Second cousins share great-grandparents
Third cousins share great-great-grandparents
etc., etc., etc.
So let's shout loudly for those at the back: "removed" in this context means of a different generation. My first cousin's offspring are my first cousins once removed. And so on.
Sarah Pochin surely being realist when she says she's mad?

As usual at this time of year, a shout out to our local National Trust teams for whom it's a bit of a nightmare when the clocks change.

“Before the election it promised to ‘remove indignities for trans people who deserve recognition and acceptance.’ But in government it has lined up alongside the Tories and Reform UK at the cruelty Olympics.” – @goodlawproject.org

The Archbishop in Jerusalem, the Most Revd Hosam Naoum, has praised the resilience of #Palestinians and has entreated Christians to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem”, in a discussion following a service at the Cathedral of St John the Divine, in #NYC, on Sunday

Honestly lads it’s not hard. This is a 97% position Ed Davey is agreeing with here. This should be easy mode politics.

The BBC are accidentally running the subtitles to Mrs Marple over the Mercury Prize, and it’s rather wonderful. A few of lines could plausibly have been written by Jarvis.

Totalitarianism replaces experts with crackpots and fools like RFK Jr. bsky.app/profile/moun...
“Totalitarianism in power invariably replaces all first-rate talents, regardless of their sympathies, with those crackpots and fools whose lack of intelligence and creativity is still the best guarantee of their loyalty.”

Strange, when this group (to which I also belong) is much more likely to vote than the under-30s who, as a generation, are having a harder time

Trying to find that recent-ish Stephen Bush piece about Starmer’s policies etc as a reaction against New Labour, and Google is letting me down. Anyone able to point me to it?
