Ireland has approved plans to permanently implement a basic income program that will support up to 2,200 artists.

A cost-benefit analysis found that for every €1 invested, society receives €1.39 back.

Officials from other countries are now expressing interest in the program.

In July StatsCan reported that in the first quarter of 2025 the income gap in Canada reached a record high. Meanwhile wages for the lowest income households fell.

Late last year, as CFSC started its advocacy for a Guaranteed Livable Basic Income (GLBI), StatsCan had recorded the highest gap to that point. This means that since last year the gap between the wealthiest and lowest income households has continued to grow. This has been the trend year after year since the start of the pandemic.

Amidst government austerity measures—including cuts of 15% across departments, gutting of ministries, and a historic commitment to spending increases for the military with no obvious investment or taxation policy to fund it—it’s clear that the services that people in Canada rely on are under threat.

Public service cuts mean fewer services. This impacts economic insecurity. A Guaranteed Livable Basic Income (GLBI) can help to mitigate the harms for those living in or close to poverty.

CFSC calls for the PEI Demonstration Project on GLBI to move ahead.

Myth: If we had a Basic Income, everyone would stop working.

Fact: People work for 2 main reasons: 1. They have an urge to do something constructive with their talents; 2. They want a good standard of living. Numerous studies have demonstrated that most people continue to work when receiving BI.

Basic income is a reskilling investment. People need time to take courses. @mark-carney.bsky.social himself said we need a system where 40 yr olds can go back to school. They need basic income for that. Without it people get stuck in dead end jobs just for income security.

Ireland just released a report showing the huge success of the unconditional basic income it provided to artists. Each $1 spent led to society gaining $1.39. Artists' earned incomes went up more than their side job incomes fell. And they were happier and used less welfare

The net cost of the BIA pilot went from €105m to under €72m due to tax generated and savings on social welfare payments

It also finds that recipients’ arts-related income increased by over €500 per month on average, while their income from non-arts work decreased by around €280. Dependence on social protection declined, with recipients receiving €100 less per month on average, and 38 percentage points less likely to receive Jobseeker’s payments.
