Best fact learned at AIA/SCS: Alexander is buried in Peoria, IL. Tho tomb location not known precisely. Presumably collaborative dig among UC / UI will find it, for display at Art Institute. Can’t wait.

As @carlosfnorena.bsky.social says, another AIA/SCS for the books. Great to see those who attended. Hope everyone is getting home safely. Afterthought for the SCS officers: some therapy cats in the exhibit hall. Just saying. 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

Derrière l’apparente profusion de maisons d’édition en France, trois groupes seulement maîtrisent les deux tiers du marché. Notamment Hachette, racheté il y a un peu plus d'un an par Vincent Bolloré.

We’re not snowed in, but it is choofing cold - even down here in the Severn valley where the Malvern Hills protect us from the worst excesses of the prevailing westerlies - and that’s all the excuse we need to settle down with some great @pottedhistory.bsky.social content. Go on, treat yourself 👇

It’s hard to believe a president would time an illegal military attack to distract the public’s attention, but today is the statutory deadline for DOJ to release its report on the Epstein file production. Maybe it is just a coincidence.

I asked GenAI for biblio on a topic of Hellenistic hsitory, esp non English. Out came the titles ! Some familiar, plus some very promising German titles of the 1990s and 2000s. I had no idea Prof. X had worked on this ! 1 min later, I asked the GenAI: do any of these exist ? Reply: actually no.

It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

My worry: a ms. from someone with an expiring tenure clock. They are out of time, panicking, and they either finished or wrote their ms. with AI.
Ban all use of AI in academic publishing. If there's a useful aspect to it, carve it out, make it reliable, and rename it. Until then, ban it all.
Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵

Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...
