As people made their way into a naturalization ceremony, ICE officials stopped 38 of the 100 applicants and told them they wouldn't be leaving with U.S. citizenship. The immigrants — who passed every step in the naturalization process — needed only to take the oath of allegiance to become citizens.

It is absolutely wild that the guy who won’t stop yelling about law and order is now personally stepping in to keep January 6 documents hidden from the police officers who were attacked that day. He knows exactly what’s in those files and he is terrified the country will see it.

i wish more people understood this dynamic and how deeply it shapes our info environment. people complain and kvetch about how so many of our most popular pundits are lazy hacks; what is less often acknowledged is that the market is quite clear that this is what most ppl want from opinion journalism
This is one of the main reasons I gave up my columnist positions at Guardian U.S. The incentives made me intellectually lazy.

This has largely been memory-holed but in Trump 1.0, he picked a big public trade fight with China. They retaliated by cutting off agriculture purchases, farmers got squeezed, Trump mailed them checks and had to go crawling back to Xi for a face-saving "deal".

Sound familiar?

it is actually kind of bananas how unitary executive theorists have taken a straightforward clause requiring the president to "faithfully execute the laws" and transformed it into a grant for the exercise of limitless unenumerated power.
The Take Care Clause was a byproduct of the lessons learned from the Glorious Revolution that the executive should not be able to dispense with the law promulgated by the legislature. It was not a constitutional provision to empower the executive branch— but to constrain it!

We must spend some time talking about why the institutions of liberal democracy matter. We cannot take it for granted that most citizens support democracy. And it must not be partisan. If it smacks of “D v R” then most folks will say “That’s just politics”.

Trump and Co. haven’t been dismantling US institutions just this year, they’ve been doing it since 2017.

America has been democratic backsliding into authoritarianism for nearly a decade. Much of what we see now builds on what they did in term 1 and advanced in the interim.

But too many denied it.
One theme here is the speed of American institutional collapse.
“It took Erdoğan 15 years to do what Trump did in 100 days. If [Americans] do not accept the fact that this is a long game, and it will be brutal, I think you won’t have the patience and stamina to bear it.”
We asked activists from authoritarian regimes what they wish they’d known sooner. Here’s what they said www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Prosecuting these people needs to be the minimum standard for any Democrat seeking office going forward.
They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.
