From who has been allowed to conduct science, whom we imbue with the title of expert, what kinds of knowledge we consider valid, why we do science, and how science has been applied (and misapplied) throughout history, it’s a misnomer to assert that science has ever been apolitical.

We found that AI tools - both general like #ChatGPT and research-specific like #Elicit - lack the reliability, relevancy and accuracy to summarise research for teachers. This is important because we have been sold the idea that AI will make research more accessible.

A picture of the title and abstract of the research paper: All sizzle, no steak: AI tools are not able to act as credible knowledge brokers by summarising evidence in mathematics education Lucy Rycroft-Smith, Darren Macey University of Cambridge Current discourse around AI (artificial intelligence) tools suggest they can offer users quick access to research evidence, with the goal of improving our practice and policies in mathematics education. However, recent evaluations suggest that AI often falls short of human capabilities in accurately summarising complex information, raising questions about trust, credibility, and reliability. In this paper, we investigate whether AI tools are able to successfully perform the educational knowledge brokering function of finding, selecting, and summarising research with implications for practitioners. In particular, we ask if AI tools are able to find research papers that actually exist (accuracy), are relevant to the question (relevancy) and are able to interpret findings into useful, actionable implications for practitioners (applicability). We find that generally they are not, and even when they are, they do so in a way that is so inconsistent as to be a serious threat to credibility. I think I'm definitely done with EDI talks that refer to "people that identify as men/women" instead of just saying "men and women", the underlying implication that "identify as women" that some of those people might not actually be women is just not something I'm willing to accept anymore.

I struggle with the reporting on ChatGPT in education because it often confirms society’s negative bias against young people—oh no, this generation is unsaveable!—when it’s possible to just educate people to be less credulous about it. which is why I wrote this: so teachers could print and assign it

The British Medical Association Resident Doctors are the backbone of the NHS, they look after us all in hospital.

They passed this motion at their conference which pulls the “supreme” court judgement to pieces.

They call it

“scientifically illiterate”
and
“biologically nonsensical”

EM4 This meeting condemns the Supreme Court ruling defining the term 'woman' with respect to the Equality Act as being based on 'biological sex', which they refer to as a person who 'was at birth of the female sex', as reductive, trans and intersex-exclusionary and biologically nonsensical. We recognize as doctors that sex and gender are complex and multifaceted aspects of the human condition and attempting to impose a rigid binary has no basis in science or medicine while being actively harmful to transgender and gender diverse people. As such this meeting: i. Reiterates the BMA's position on affirming the rights of transgender and non-binary individuals to live their lives with dignity, having their identity respected. Reminds the Supreme Court of the existence of intersex people and reaffirms their right to exist in the gender identity that matches their sense of self, regardless of whether this matches any identity assigned to them at birth. iii. Condemns scientifically illiterate rulings from the Supreme Court, made without consulting relevant experts and stakeholders, that will cause real-world harm to the trans, non-binary and intersex communities in this country. iv. Commits to strive for better access to necessary health services for trans, non-binary and gender-diverse people.
