"Franklin led the team that created what has been called 'arguably the most important photo ever taken,' the celebrated Photo 51, which revealed the helical structure of DNA. When the structure was published in 1953, however, Franklin... was not among the authors."

My dad the chem prof taught me about the injustice of Rosalind Franklin before I could read. I can only imagine the rant his students got. The stories have been known for decades. We just need to tell them.

“I was working in the lab, late one night, when my eyes beheld an eerie sight. For my monster from his slab began to rise, and suddenly, to my surprise, he did the mash. IN THE MIDDLE OF OCTOBER!”

This is why I’ve never understood ‘historical fiction’ about real people or fanfiction for non-fictional characters — how easily can fiction turn into fact when something becomes popular (and the publicists get ahold of the ‘good’ myths)?
I only found out recently that the Columbus of US popular tradition can be traced specifically to a fictional biography by Washington Irving in 1828. It seems that during the 1800s writers engaged in intentional mythmaking. File it along with Mason Locke Weems' "biography" of Washington.

In Medieval European cities and towns, people regularly bought cooked food (often pies, stews, or roasted meat) from cookshops. Many people had no oven at home. The modern media we get our ideas about medieval life from doesn't include these, so most people don't realise.

Once we know better, we must do better.
GenX friends, we know your parents just handed you sparklers. They didn't have the Consumer Product Safety Commission on their phone like you do now. Maybe if they'd known sparklers burn as hot as a blowtorch they would have reconsidered (maybe). Once we know better, we must do better.

Did the world end in 2012 or was that just pop culture?

(I know this is from late ‘00’s but it made way on the party circuit well into the ‘10’s)
