A lot of authors in this genre want to let readers easily self-insert, and the way to do that is to make the protagonist maximally bland: vaguely nice and mildly 'quirky', gender-conforming, cis, white, no real thought or ambition, etc.

This is the case for all contemp romance regardless of orientation. The closer a genre is to no-effort wish fulfillment, the more it'll resemble this.

The very reason for this is that it's a subgenre that prioritizes 'relatability' above everything else. Neither readers nor writers want to put in any effort or imagination, reducing characters to slates as blank as possible that'll appeal to the lowest common denominator.
