This is an excellent list of tips. One thing I also do: I use @blockpartyapp.com which walks you through your social media settings to make them safer. I have found it easy to use & helpful. there are lot of settings on a lot of platforms and it’s hard to keep track of them all.
Right, so this is ol’boy’s real/regular email address, not a burner—he’s written Google Maps reviews with it three years ago. That means he’s used it for lots of other things too.

Which means if Elizabeth wanted to track this guy down it would be piss easy

I really can't emphasize enough that it takes only about three pieces of information about someone to re-identify them. None of us are particularly anonymous if we have any sort of sustained online presence

One time I posted a picture of my apartment complex's trash compactor and someone immediately messaged me telling me where I lived.

I genuinely think before anyone joins social media for the first time they should be required to read a thread from 4chan demonstrating how quickly a bunch of strangers can track down your physical location by comparing the tile in the background of your selfies to a 6-year old google earth image

LinkedIn still has a reputation as a “safe” and professional platform, but in reality, it’s one of the most exposed parts of your online identity. Your post history is public, discoverable by search, and visible to 2nd and 3rd degree connections.

Same, i have a sophisticated and wealthy client who lost $500k in a fake real estate deal where there were five or six people on the other side of the transaction pretending to be real estate agents, lawyers, court clerks etc.- NOBODY is prepared to be personally targeted in that way.

It seems so far fetched, and yet, as she explains, it's just a series of small steps to slowly tug you off the path of normalcy and make you go along in the story the scammers are spinning for you.
Just enough detail that makes you go "wow, if they know that, maybe it *is* real".

Being on LinkedIn is relatively unavoidable in my experience, but I don't list my current employer until/unless I'm looking for something new and that means I don't get the gift card scams because that's how they find you.
