I wonder how many apps the average person has in their task bar or dock. Someone at school said looking at my laptop made them nervous because I have so much going on at the bottom.

The aim of the US far-right, led by Trump, Miller, Thiel and Musk was always to destroy liberal Europe in favour of a fascist version, with the UK and Farage leading the internal assault.
Interestingly cryptic email from Jeffrey Epstein to Peter Thiel, 26 June 2016:

"Brexit, just the beginning"

At numerous times over the past decade I’ve noticed that most online political spaces seem to prime people to help fascism. Right wing spaces prime you to support it, sometimes ironically, while left wing spaces encourage people to adopt strategies that don’t seem to be particular effective.

I am pretty much caught up for school, or at least I will be by Monday morning. I have another weekend off due to the incoming storm.

I have no school until next Tuesday because there is a professional conference. I need to use that time to get caught up, but getting caught up for some reason involves watching a bunch of tv.

A professor said she would write me a letter for a local fellowship, but she is concerned that the opportunity might be too small for me. She will write the letter so I have a back up, but wants me to find bigger opportunities. That means a lot to me.

I found a section of the library filled with writers I discovered on my own after I finished college. I’m really excited to read them and add their ideas to my collection of index cards!!!

I have read two books so far this year, and I really wish I had someone to discuss them with but that’s unlikely.

I had my first week of classes. One professor is worried that I am taking on too much work so I can finish on time. Another professor laughed and said she signed off on the extra class because she knows I can handle it.

My final semester starts tomorrow morning. Wish me luck.

I am about to start my final semester. I am finishing up some applications for fellowships that would continue my education because the world is on fire and the job market is trash. Not sure if this is the best path forward, but at least it is a path.

yep. i can identify any number of structural issues but at the end of the day the basic problem is the republican party. this has been apparent for at least 20 years. it is also an incredibly unpopular observation to make among “serious” people.
Right.

If you want a good explanation of why the American system of government worked well enough for 200 years and then suddenly stopped, it's because Republicans in Congress suddenly started letting their partisan interests COMPLETELY override their institutional interests
a lot of problems wouldn't exist if we had a congress with even an ounce of self interest

A lot of individual political opinions expressed on the internet boil down to either messianic fantasies or apocalyptic delusions. It's fascinating to watch, but it is also depressing because neither of these allow people to solve real problems.

I got a collection of short stories by Gene Wolfe. I found one of them a little perplexing, so I reread it. Upon the rereading I realized it’s a horror story and the narrator is a monster.

I’m an assistant pig-keeper.
Well, now I'm an English professor...

I also think I'm not overly bummed about the GRE because even if this doesn't work out I can always reapply to schools next year when applications reopen. The issue is I pretty much know what I want to do, but I'm not sure where I need to go.

I took the gre but did not do as well as I had hoped. I am ranking on good letters of recommendation and a high gpa to offset it.

The last of my gifts arrived, so tomorrow I get to wrap them. I hope everyone likes what they got!

I spent two days cleaning the room above the garage since I'll be living here for at least one more semester. I suddenly have a lot more room.

I’m officially done with the semester. I get to take a day off to read silly books and watch tv before I dive into applications.

We finally got feedback on the second part of our budget project! I got 100% on the group project!!!

I think my presentation is done. Now I have to draft two documents by Monday morning and I am officially on track.

I have a lot of work to do this weekend, but if I get through it all I'm basically set until January 9th. Go me!
