I think one problem a lot of people, Marxists and non-Marxists alike, have is they assume a sort of textbook idea, and not a set of ideas or principles that should be applied within context.

I think one thing keeping us from talking frankly re: how much it costs just to live is the constant “baristas/people with iPhones/etc. aren’t working class” bullshit conflating superficial cues with capitalist relations to the means of production. Nobody wants to admit they make ANY money!
People did warn me when I was younger to pursue high-paying fields, and I always shrugged them off. I thought, “I’m not a materialistic person, I don’t want to live in luxury—I’ll be fine making a modest salary. Money’s not important to me.”
