The NOAA hurricane hunter crews going without pay during the government shutdown operate two venerable P-3 Orion aircraft, nicknamed "Kermit" and "Miss Piggy." They typically fly 8-10 hour missions while cutting through the hurricane eyewall and deploying probes.

I am a serious professional scientist. I am also a commissioner of climate change and have to discuss practical and pragmatic solutions with people who disagree strongly with climate action. I have a calm and optimism-driven approach to climate action.

40 inches of rain is biblically catastrophic.
Hurricane Melissa which is en route to decimate Haiti and Jamaica rapidly intensified to category 4 storm. Rapid intensification is a hallmark of climate change, but that category is only a measure of its wind speed. It is also expected to bring up to 40 inches of rain
