My cartoon for this week’s @theguardian.com books
Title: Why do you want the book to be banned?

A cartoon with ten panels showing people answering:

1. I read the book and hated it.

 2. I didn't read the book, but I still hate it.

 3. I hate books!

 4. I love banning things!

5. I could not relate to the characters.

 6. I'm not sure, but better safe than sorry?

 7. My copy arrived damaged.

 8. It could fall into the hands of a child.

 9. It could fall on to the head of a child.

 10. I didn't understand the ending.

Yes, this is a great model. And MN's Democratic-Farmer-Labor party, while essentially falling in line w/the national Dem party, is still rooted in the kind of labor-based socialism that was strong in the Midwest, once upon a time. Could that be revived? I dunno.
bradrichard.bsky.social
Which instances are you thinking of? Ross Perot pretty much handed Clinton a victory by splitting off GOP voters. True, Nader helped the Dems lose in 2000, but he did so from the left. And Marianne Williamson? I think that one is hard to asses b/c the context was fraught with so much interference.

This! Why are we devoted to a broken 2-party system the way some people are to an abusive marriage? "Well, that's the way _____ is." It's what leads rich Dem donors to claim they're encouraging bipartisanship (or something) by fundraising for Susan Fucking Collins. www.thenation.com/article/poli...

Yeah, that's because cis-het people, Dem & GOP, want to protect their right to seek abortions. I really don't see that same energy coming from cishet people to protect queers. I speak as a queer in a red state whose anxiety about this is pretty goddam fucking high right now.

Honestly, I never thought much of 1984 as a novel, so it really sucks to end up living in an even crappier version of it.
bradrichard.bsky.social
Yep. And it amazes me how many people are not paying attention. Even some who think they are.
bradrichard.bsky.social
In fact, at this point, if you're able to casually dismiss this, then please keep away from me and the people I love because you are dangerous.

This is not normal political discourse: this is further incitement to violence & further justification for weaponizing the legal and electoral systems against MAGA's "enemies." Do not brush this off as something so extreme it's not worth taking seriously.

What astounds me, although it shouldn't, is how many of these people are self-avowed Christians. Like . . . y'all need to work on sorting out your team colors a little better. Not to mention your values.

There has been a rush among centrists like Gavin Newsom and Ezra Klein to brush over the hateful life of Charlie Kirk and valorize the man.

Let me be clear, killing Charlie Kirk was wrong and abhorrent.

We must condemn murder without sanitizing a man who built his empire on hate.

My latest piece.
We Must Not Posthumously Sanitize Charlie Kirk's Hateful Life
Influential anti-LGBTQ+ activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated on Wednesday. While condemning violence is something most can get behind, sanitization of his hate has gone too far.

I've watched the clip. You have nothing to apologize for. Your tone, to my ears, was actually quite compassionate. If Kirk had survived the attack, I would have hoped that someone close to him would have told him exactly what you said, in hopes that he would have listened and learned.

One of the things the Nazis did when coming to power was push propaganda that Jews were criminals and prone to violence by focusing on crime committed by Jews or fabricating crime they falsely attributed to Jews.

The last 36 hours on X has been this on a massive scale against trans people.

I also think we need to keep hammering home that you don’t go to college to “debate.” You go to learn, which is not the same thing.

I will never understand how American elites managed to convince themselves that uncivil debate — not fascism, not impunity and not widespread indifference to facts — is the defining problem of our time.

How We Brought Respectful Debate Back to The Harvard Crimson’s Editorial Board
To us, the solution is deceptively simple. Universities should create environments where students with different views must talk to one another routinely and establish ground rules that ensure they do so without distractions or prejudgment.

Illiberalism on college campuses isn’t inevitable. At The Crimson, it took only a few months to radically improve.
