Yesterday, Cyber Ireland hosted their annual conference, chaired by our CEO and Cyber Ireland Chair, @brianhonan.bsky.social.

The event was a fantastic success, featuring a series of engaging talks and panel discussions, including one expertly moderated by our very own Dr. Valerie Lyons.

Big piece in POLITICO asking about the independence of Ireland's process of appointing people to its Data Protection Commission. There is deep unease in Brussels about Ireland appointing a former Meta lobbyist as Meta's watchdog. Now questions about who was involved.

I really enjoyed @joetidy.bsky.social book CTRL ALT CHAOS where he explores a lot of the motivations and evolution of capabilities on teenage hackers. I strongly recommend it as a read to get more understanding of this

At this stage, my main motivation for trying to learn enough Gaeilge to be able to post on here in it is to no longer receive replies from the specific type of North Americans that are all over the timeline at the moment having an absolute meltdown in Irish people's mentions. We can free ourselves.

Can’t believe the Irish tried a version of UBI, found it worked, and decided to keep it rather than commission another study.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

When a BBC reporter can do this, without privileged access to communications data, I find it hard to accept law enforcement's constant claim that they are "going dark" because of encrypted messaging. Encryption is not the main obstacle to effective law enforcement.

It annoys me when I see people use the phrase "Cyber 9/11" or "Cyber Pearl Harbour". Its disrespectful to those who died or were injured in these real events and also reeks of the FUD factor, something we need to move away from in cybersecurity. Cyberrisks are real without sensationalising them
