Fun fact: the Beatles filmed this segment on the same TV sound stage where The Muppet Show would be filmed 13 years later.

For the first time ever, Mike Johnson has seen the video everyone is talking about. Weird, that.

At top left is the “dragster style” ship that Lucas abandoned after seeing the Eagle landers in SPACE:1999, and deciding they looked too similar to this version of the Falcon. The design was scrapped, and the model was refitted and reused as the TANTIVE IV. The cockpit was reused for the new Falcon.

Reading yet another thread about Agatha Christie, and all the “pfffft I figured it out halfway through the book” responses get my eyes rolling right out of my head. Sorry, but no you didn’t.

In his first day in office, Trump pardoned nearly 1,600 people in the Jan. 6th Capitol riot. Five years later, most of the officers injured that day have never widely shared their experience.

Here are some of their stories, in their own words:

Sad news to hear that yet another notable biographer is gone. Schumacher wrote a terrific biography of Will Eisner, and a fun bio of Francis Ford Coppola, among others.

January 6 in History

Wrote this two years ago: “If the insurrectionist-in-chief returns to power without ever facing any real consequences and while explicitly declaring his intent to establish a vindictive autocracy, then January 6 will have been successful.”

And here we are.

Forget? Never.

(And I wrote a bit about it in my upcoming biography of the U.S. Capitol building.)

In high school, I once told someone I was reading Agatha Christie’s DEATH ON THE NILE. They said, “oh, that’s the one where [gives away exact details of the murder and who did it], right?”

🤬
me: I'm finally watching [very popular TV show].

social media people: did you get to the part where the bomb goes off on the hot air balloon with John on board?

me: ... fucking no.

I'm gonna cheat a bit on this one, because it's not really a *video* game as much as it is a computer game (Infocom called it "interactive fiction). Playing this through to the very end (along with my brother @ambignostic.bsky.social) was one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I've ever had.

One of my all-time favorite bits. This wasn’t originally shown in the US run of The Muppet Show—rather, it’s one of the pieces that was added in the UK because of their slightly-longer run times.

Anyway: enjoy. And you tell me: is it cultural?
Muppets comedy doesn’t require a huge production budget. It also doesn’t have to be cranked to 11 to deliver solid comedy beats *if* you can deliver them through strongly defined characters. You can watch this & instantly know & laugh at these character types in a sketch...

THE MUPPET SHOW could take an obscure album cut by Harry Chapin & use it to explore character, here building on Scooter’s insecurity while also delivering the show’s underlying ethos about these characters having each other’s backs, & the unifying nature of art.
