I continue to have no sympathy left for whinging about how the public are rude about AI and feel threatened by it when the biggest players in the AI space have spent years very vocally and constantly *threatening the public*

I am so often, as I look at the world in this moment, reminded of this verse from the 5-volume Ming dynasty novel of manners “Plum in the Golden Vase” (trans Roy):

Though the preceding carriages have overturned by the thousands

The carriages that follow continue to overturn in the same way.

today’s affirmation: I am within the acceptable range of deviation. I am a perfectly roasted quail. if I was a car the mechanics would find nothing weird or rodent related in my air filter. I am upright. There are no stones or excess debris in my shoes. I still have all my bones.

a late friend of mine was a partner at an ad firm in the ‘60s. He told the story of a car ad shoot where someone left the handbrake off, and the car rolled off a cliff into a ravine.

He revisited the (very remote) site years later in his retirement, and the rusting shell of it was still there.
always great when you're watching some italian movie from the 70s and they launch a car off a cliff and it explodes and disappears into a deep ravine and you just know that fuckin thing is still down there

bring back shame, combat vice signaling
we all got cowed into avoiding "virtue signaling" as if the public affirmation of socially agreed upon ethical principles was somehow cringey instead of a significant part of what a "society" even is. now all there's left is vice signaling, and it's reshaping society.

Pointing out (because when else would I get to show off this research) that about 533 U.S.–produced features, from both major studios and independents, were released into theaters in 1957. In 2017, there were 131 given wide release, including independents. It's astounding how output has shrunk.

Gotta give it to Gene Wolfe. The man can describe a scene so ornately yet so also make it so approachable and lived-in feeling.
