Democratic complicity, or at best their total inability to understand when they are being fleeced by liars, has been as much a part of this process as anything the Republicans have done. Their fear of backlash has made them not just fail to stop but enthusiastically accelerate this process.

As I've been saying: there has been an ongoing project to turn every law enforcement agency, from your local sheriff to the NYPD, into a heavily armed right wing paramilitary organisation. This project has been largely successful and has had bipartisan support since 2001 at least.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

It will forever be my curse that I never got to attend the World of Sid & Marty Krofft indoor theme park, in the complex that would later become more famous as the CNN headquarters.

That the park was by all accounts a debacle does not diminish my regret for not having bathed in its wonder.
