There’s a layer in most organizations where bold ideas don’t die; they just slowly get safer. I wrote about the “frozen middle,” where fear of being wrong waters down creativity until it becomes beige on taupe.

If you’ve ever watched strong work lose its edge in review, this one’s for you.
The Frozen Middle: Where Bold Ideas Go to Thaw (and Sometimes Die)
There’s a moment in almost every creative review where work doesn’t fail because it’s wrong.

You know what they’re going to store in those warehouses?

People
In the last month ICE has bought warehouses in:

- Hagerstown, MD: $102 million
- Surprise, AZ: $70 million
- Hamburg, PA: $87 million
- Tremont, PA: $120 million
- San Antonio, TX: $82 million
- El Paso, TX: $123 million
- Social Circle, GA: price unknown

This is unprecedented.

So while the Squarespace Emma Stone ad was visually stunning, why would she have kept trying to buy a domain on different computers if it was already taken? It doesn't matter where it's purchased, if it's unavailable, right? Or am I missing something?

“In many B2B categories, a purchase cycle can last five years, with a buying process stretching over 12 months. And yet success is routinely judged on what happened in the last quarter. Campaigns are optimized against 90 days of data as if that tells us something...”

I’m bored by the celebrity overuse in ads this year. Like it’s bordering on obscene.

A few had relevance but most don’t.

derek's Black History Month thought of the day

Day 7
Black History Month is less of a celebration to me, and more an opportunity for others to see more of what Black culture is than the stereotypes and troupes.

It is an invitation to learn about us. To see us.
