Palatability is ultimately the enemy of the liberation because when the going gets tough, they're burning books that even smell gay much less the ones that show queer people as complex, realistic, both kind and cruel, as well as defiant towards the social technologies of patriarchy.

I've noticed a lot of ostensibly gay books are not "culturally" queer. They exhibit either a disconnect or a dismissal of liberation in their aim to be assimilated into more palatable trends, informed by trade restrictions that perpetuate stigma against queer people rather than subvert them.
