Saw a post asking how this was different than modern RE games, or Mortal Kombat, and the answer is 'those are made by big companies that can start serious shit if Steam tried this'.
It's always just petty tyrants hitting stuff that earns their ire that is also small enough to not rock the boat.

I do see this as a trend alongside the exponential growth of the Occupational Horror genre.

Nomura was so good at playing the game, the fact that he massaged "Mickey Mouse can appear in one scene to wave at everyone" into the finale of KH1 is some crazy work
The whole "you can't do ANYTHING with Mickey" discussion beginning again because of the Living Characters doc is funny because literally every KH example of something horrible happening to a member of the Fab Five has a "Disney Japan executives fought tooth and nail for this" story behind it.
