We basically agree, and I do feel really bad that indie devs just can't get the word out there anymore by traditional means. This is a subject that pisses me off every time because it could've been avoided. But while we figure out new ways to do press, we're stuck

As somebody more on the SEO side than ever, it's really brutal out there. Traffic is *way* down And nobody knows how to adapt.

I think the issue is that there are definitely media corps like Ziff Davis and Valnet to blame, but it's just Google. Even beyond greedy media execs, you have Google and Meta who went through the space and ate it to only leave crumbs. The sheer number of pubs they left in their wake is ridiculous

There is that too. But you can only do so much when the corps destroyed the space even for ppl who don't care about money. 15 years ago you could make a little just with ads. Google destroyed the ad market. Want people to read your site? You need to do content on top of content because of social...

Yah. And I think those places do still exist but RPS was doing cool stuff when we weren't at the whims of algorithms for discovery. Now you have to play by really dumb internet rules.

And then there's staffing. Games announcements don't do traffic so you need to put the staff elsewhere

Yup! You can't just do that anymore for a lot of reasons. One that I think people haven't mentioned yet is that over the past decade, Google has moved towards a 300-word minimum for posts. So you can't just write a couple sentences with a trailer like you used to

Yeah news is not something outlets focus on and when they do, they need to justify it, either with a really cool catchy angle or a topic people are searching for. You can't just cover every game that looks kind of interesting.

There are smaller outlets that would cover a game like this but the games press as a whole has been decimated. Beyond that, the suits in charge are telling them *not* to cover smaller games because they don't bring in traffic. News especially doesn't bring in the clicks
